    RPG Evolution: Weight, What?

Your #2 confused me, and I was gonna make a smarmy comment like “What do you mean, ‘once-a-campaign’?” But then I realize I play all the games I DM as your #1. Every game is a survival game.

    RPG Evolution: Weight, What?

Bookkeeping isn’t fun, but simulations and resource constraints definitely can be. The trick is finding an enjoyable balance for your group.

    RPG Evolution: Weight, What?

This comment right here is part of why I struggle with 5E

    RPG Evolution: Weight, What?

That’s a partial solution for sure. Still, if you’re the type of simulationist who likes encumbrance, you probably aren’t phoning in tracking food, water, and ammo either.

    RPG Evolution: Weight, What?

Definitely a weakness of modern D&D. By a series of mechanical quirks, Dex is simply better than other abilities: Great defense, great offense, great non-combat utility, all from one convenient number. You move fast, fight from range, and there’s no friendly-fire to worry about. You’re right...

    RPG Evolution: Weight, What?

It certainly requires a specific game type to encourage “realistic” adventuring practices, the nitty gritty details that aren’t part of the heroic stories/shows/games. Also I would love a prestidigitation spell for personal hygiene in real life, so convenient. Can I use it on other people too?

    RPG Evolution: Weight, What?

I love this logistical stuff but it definitely seems unpopular with players, who prefer the fantastical heroism of carrying everything without ever worrying about it. (Nevermind that even wearing a backpack would interfere with combat in ways players arent prepared for.) The solution is easy...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases Updated Unearthed Arcana for Arcane Subclasses

4E vs 5E. Are you certain the sales difference is due to the format and not the difference in overall popularity? I have strong doubts that the format is the root variable here. Plus I still think “____’s Book of Everything” is a really stupid naming convention. To me, I’d be confused as hell...

    RPG Evolution: You Go First

Fascinating. I guess if it was a military exercise, then there’s some training value in doing it? Certainly safer in numbers and with a disciplined group of people, compared to, say, some random hikers.

That’s actually pretty wild. Was it nighttime, or literally just that dark within the jungle?

WizKids to Release New Red Dragon Plaque, With More Manageable Head Size

This comment reminded me why I got away from minis and amused me with a realization: I stopped buying plastic minis more than a decade ago; I had too many of them and was frustrated at the cost, the storage and convenient access conundrum, and the fact that with 1000 minis you still might never...

WizKids to Release New Red Dragon Plaque, With More Manageable Head Size

Yeah I remember that; it’s a point in favour of the stability of the dragon designs across 3E to 5E. In this case, I phrased my comment as “a lot of creatures were redesigned in 4E” because there were some iconic looks that changed dramatically compared to 3E: trolls, ogres, and beholders just...

WizKids to Release New Red Dragon Plaque, With More Manageable Head Size

My apologies! It wasn’t meant as a particular shot at anyone for wanting it. I’m just cynical about expensive decorations and the proliferation of plastic accessories in this hobby over the past decade. The existence of items like this seems wasteful, considering that it’s just a decoration.

WizKids to Release New Red Dragon Plaque, With More Manageable Head Size

Prior to 2000, D&D was pretty inconsistent about how their dragons looked. 3E brought new branding and very particular design for the most iconic creatures, and they mostly stuck to those designs. Lots of creatures were redesigned again in 4E, but the red dragon wasn’t because the design was...

WizKids to Release New Red Dragon Plaque, With More Manageable Head Size

Anybody got a picture of the old one, for comparison? I’m still not sure why it was necessary to redesign the iconic look that worked for 24 years, but whatever

    Intrusive Ads

I don’t like the obnoxious ads either, but the real drum I’ve been beating lately is subscription. There are a buttload of prolific posters here who aren’t subscribers. They clearly enjoy ENWorld, but evidently haven’t bothered to consider a dollar value for they enjoyment they get. I think a...

Paizo Ends Pathfinder Adventure Path Softcovers, Switching to Quarterly Model

How do they define “recreational books”? Most RPG books have more in common with a college textbook than a novel: large size, lots of graphics, indexed content, etc. How has the price of “college books” changed?

Paizo Ends Pathfinder Adventure Path Softcovers, Switching to Quarterly Model

Sad to see the end of an era, little products are fun impulse purchases. But overall this change makes sense, since I’m not sure how many people were using only pieces of the path vs the whole thing anyway.
