D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Ehhh....static damage actually could rise higher in AD&D for martials due to increased Str damage bonuses and specialization. The difference is that while you can assume a 20 stat eventually in 5e, it's hard to say what a "normal" character could achieve in AD&D, since "stat goes up" is pretty...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I think the main problem I have with Legendary Resistance is that it doesn't scale to the party. Some parties have multiple characters tossing out saving throws every turn. Some have very few. This results in the ability being crippling for some parties and quickly overcome by others. A...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I was going to comment about this. 5e's Sleep was excellent design, and it bothered me that it wasn't used more. I was pretty bummed when 2024, rather than making more spells work this way, decided to change Sleep instead!

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

The first time I ran into it in 5e was when I ran Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan in AL. The lower levels of the Shrine are full of toxic air that deals damage every hour, pretty much preventing rest until you reach the safer areas. The party trivialized that with LTH and rested pretty much...

D&D General Melissa shows how badly LTH misses the mark on wind protection

4e had a few "safe rest" Rituals, including: LTH, Secure Shelter, and Solace Bole. In addition, my Ranger carried an Exodus Knife, a 1/day item that allowed him to etch a "door" on a solid surface, which opened onto an extradimensional space for 8 hours. Of course, in 4e, forcing a long...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

True, but I was thinking of how the DMG goes out of it's way to describe what certain potions look like, presumably for identification purposes.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

I don't think potions are made from medieval glass- if they were, you wouldn't be able to tell what's in them.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

And sure, when you hear a cry for help in the city, you do have the opportunity to drink a potion. And find you really didn't need 23 Strength to catch a pickpocket who stole an NPC's coin pouch. There are absolutely times when players know ahead of time what they are getting into. And just as...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

Actual play example: "As you walk through the dense forest, the air seems hushed, and the shadows cast by the ancient trees shrouds everything in gloom. You know only that something has been causing the loggers from the village of Tragidore to vanish without a trace, but you were able to glean...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

Reading the DMG and PHB, at least, it never specifies what the containers are made out of, but one can infer that they are glass because several potions describe what they look like. I think the takeaway is that they would be made of glass for easy identification. RE: potion weights. There is...

D&D 5E (2024) How to make ranged attack more hazardous for the user.

I just remembered we had this discussion before.

Re-usable metal containers, perhaps? I don't think anything prevents you from pouring a potion into another container, like say a hip flask.

D&D 5E (2024) How to make ranged attack more hazardous for the user.

So if natural weapons are ok, then I can see species like lizardfolk or tabaxi becoming more popular. I"m assuming improvised weapons are out (unless maybe proficient in their use? Could create a Tavern Brawler loophole). I can see problems with casters who use non-weapon focuses that take up...

Should Monks have to carry a weapon? What about a shield?

Supernaturally fast, or a Fighter with Action Surge.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I see one problem with this. Clerics and Druids. You'd have to slay the sacred cow that allows them to prepare any spell that happens to be on their spell list, and get the "it doesn't feel like D&D" crowd on board with this change. Certainly for Wizards, this was once pretty much how the...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

So about potions replacing spellcasters- let's examine this more closely. I'll look at the arguments in no particular order. 1: why use healing spells if potions are more efficient? But are they though? 50 gp to get an average of 7 hit points restored. That's worse than a Healing Word in...

    D&D General Talking Animals

Earlier this year I ran a 2e adventure where you encounter a talking giant owl. I saw no reason to change this, despite the fact that giant owls in 5e do, not, generally speak. None of my players acted like it was anything strange (though one was convinced it was a Druid in beast form, lol).

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

My stance is still that, regardless of whether or not you feel it's easy to mess with LTH (and similar magic) in your game, you shouldn't have to take those steps in the first place. If WotC wanted to force players to conserve resources and not rest whenever they wanted to, giving them tools...

Do you use "voice acting" when you play?

Yes, though I'm pretty far from professional quality, lol. I don't know how my players feel about it, but at least they don't make fun of me!
