This is what I figured was going on.

It's a nearly meaningless difference. You won't even notice that extra failure. The feat itself is far better than any +1 to a stat bonus. And that 10-20% increase in failure is also meaningless. It sounds good until you realize that the difference is so small you won't be able to notice...

So what. All missing a +1 wis bonus means is that using that ability will on average fail 1 more time every 20 attempts.

It does make it fun to play. And it makes it not fun to play. That's a personal thing, not a general rule. Stats were important in 3e, because of the treadmill. In 5e stat bonuses don't mean a whole heck of a lot.

You've answered your own question there. Feats need to be diverse, not just wis, cha, or int.

You do realize that stat bonuses as part of the background = story, right. They tend to be chosen to match the background. Like elves having higher dex bonus before the changes. That was for story.

This is wrong. Nothing needs to be optimized. It's personal preference, which means story is equally valid with mechanics.

I think the point is that if something is about Hellgate Keep, a FR specific location, it's pretty easy to rename it the Pit of Despair in your world and use it. What makes it FR is the FR specific lore. What makes all that usable is that it's just words, so change a few of them and it works...
