D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Riverdale? RIVERDALE!? It always gets me when memes and people get Rivendell wrong.

What does vancian have to do with it?

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Yep. By that point in 3e, they were playtesting ideas for 4e, some of which went on to be included in 5e.

It's a roleplaying game all the time, not a pick and choose when you roleplay and when you don't game. That's fine for you and your group if you want to play where you only roleplay sometimes. It doesn't work for me and mine, though.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

My issue with the scaling cantrips is that they are unlimited use. I mean, my 20th level wizard somehow only has enough energy to cast 4 first level spells with their d8 or whatever damage, but I can launch an infinite number of 4d10 firebolts. At that point that cantrip is on par with 2nd and...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Being stripped of equipment really doesn't matter as much in 5e. It happened to me once, so I went through all of my spells to see which ones I could no longer cast and was shocked to find out that a large chunk of my spells didn't use components. It was barely an inconvenience.

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

Oh, I know. Once he gets going, though, he's all in. Antagonizing the terrorists and everything. He still has that background that allows him to do that. Some college kid isn't going to switch it up and try to take them all out, because he doesn't have the background for it.

My players like to roleplay, so I know they'd rather have it than not. That's the key, play with people who like the things you like.

Why would I skip out on good roleplaying? I'm not going to just narrate the group meeting and taking the job. It's going to be roleplayed out to the benefit of everyone at the table. We like roleplaying, so we aren't going to just have a quick narration and end up in front of the hill giant...

That's still something in the background to explain the "adventuring."

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

While that is true, there still generally needs to be some buy in on the part of the PC. Bilbo agreed to be a burglar. McLane was a cop who felt obligated to stop the bad guys. Had McClane been a student on a trip around Europe, he'd have stayed hidden in the bathroom or came out and...

I get what you are saying, so maybe it's just the particular example. With roleplaying, you don't have to be an actor who has his voice choke up as tears run down your face. You can just describe the king as being teary eyed, with his voice choking up for a few seconds before he can continue...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

If I am traveling Europe for a year due to wanderlust, I'm not going to take a job with a bunch of people I just met to go and free a kidnap victim from some highly armed terrorists or clear out a cellar infested with highly venomous snakes. I'm going to go to see places like the Roman...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

I very rarely write backstories that are that horrific, and neither do my players. The only time I'd consider it, would be if we were playing an evil campaign and I wanted a background to explain why his moral compass is so far off kilter. My backgrounds are typically like yours. Mostly...

I'd hate that as a both a player and a DM. I'd want to roleplay being approached by the King's representatives, engage in the negotiation for compensation, and then play out the journey there. If the DM skipped all of that, I hope kingdom prepared to just give us whatever we demand as...

If you're chuckling at the DM's teary eyed king, you aren't invested in roleplaying. Those sorts of things are about roleplaying and shouldn't be avoided just because someone in the table isn't invested in roleplaying. What I said applies just fine. It would be a far poorer game if the DM had...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

In my opinion that's an extraordinarily wrong position to hold and I hope to God that nobody who reads that takes it to heart. A great many people enjoy roleplaying and get a lot out of it, even if they aren't(and almost all who enjoy it aren't) actors so skilled that they can regularly evoke...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

What's funny is that I remember swords being dominant in 1e games as well, but I went back and looked at the 1e DMG and swords occupied 11% of the random magic item table, while Other Weapons occupied 14%. Randomly rolled, you'd find more non-sword magic weapons. The 2e charts were even more...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

There are no story milestones for leveling if you are using encounters for experience like that. It's one or the other usually. If someone is using both, then I have no idea how much faster it goes.
