As far as WotC books go, outside of the core three, the LGG was my favorite. Including third party books, I'd add in A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe. If I had to pare my 3.5 collection down to five books it would be: the core three, plus the LGG and MMS:WE.

In my experience, when using the 4d6 method -- or any other roll then assign method, really -- class choice occurs in between rolling the ability scores and assigning the ability scores. As an aside, one quick way to help speed up rolling dice is to use the =RANDBETWEEN(#,#) function in Excel. With one click of my mouse I can quickly roll large sets of dice.

That's too bad. The style of game that Water Bob is discussing, when run well, with engaged players, is an amazing experience. I am lucky enough to have two DMs who are quite capable of running that style of campaign.
