    D&D 5E (2014) The classes of 5e (now with 90% less speculation)

I may have reached too far in saying you can justify the runepriest. I'm not the guy to defend it really, since I thought they were a waste of space when they were released. But I can justify the psion, warlock, and sorcerer, and all I would need to do so is point the alternate magic system...

    Hobbits are Back!

Isaac Asimov thought about this, and his conclusion was that the pace of human development would actually slow down. This is because old farts tend to be set in their ways, but don't move aside for the new blood and the new ideas. I would resist making a snarky comment from 4e fans on this...

D&D 5E (2014) So why are you buying 5th edition?

I like to experiment with new editions, but I never go deep down the rabbit hole of splatbooks. I learned my lesson with 2e and never repeated it. I have my shelf of RPG books, but I don't have a shelf dedicated strictly to one edition or another. I prune regularly with what works and...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition: "One edition for all editions..."

Yep, I will say that is correct. Whether that bothers you or not depends on whether you like to experiement with new mechanics for D&D, or you'd rather stick with what works.

    D&D 5E (2014) The classes of 5e (now with 90% less speculation)

Yes, I think every class that has ever been invented can, even the Runepriest. We need tougher justifications than that if we are going to set about pruning.

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

That would be good, except my eyes glazed over from all the book keeping required. I suppose it could be done at the designer level, with a "recommended amount of healing by party makeup" but I'm not really keen on that either. It does bring up an interesting point though. I have no problem...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

You know it and I know it, but still people scream about "schrodeinger's hit points" or "how can I go from bleeding to healed by a warlord shouting at me". I can certainly agree with this. Any ideas? 'Cause I got none.

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

Well, we believe things because we see it, because people we trust have seen it, or people of authority have seen it. So I guess it all depends on how trusting you are. I've seen it, and people of authority in the game have seen it. So I guess you could at least accept that it is a problem...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

I liked the idea of a VP/WP system in the original Star Wars D20, though its implementation left much to be desired. Certainly though, having your VP refresh with a short 5 minute rest (taking great care not to call it an encounter power) would make the need for healing surges almost redundant...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

That looks good, save for the damage to realism of treating someone while they are still fighting. Drinking a potion while fighting is just as absurd of course. I can't see anything wrong with this though, except to the most pendandic who would require that recovery from injuries take as long...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

Sure, but would you miss healing surges, or would you miss what they do? If there is a way to get the pacing, restoration, and all-martial party viability of 4e without healing surges, why not see what we can come up with? This thread is about spitballing ideas. Whether there should be...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

Yes, because when everyone has only 25% hp left (or less) they go right into the next encounter to face certain death. 'Cause that's manly. Shut up and stop insulting my manhood. All it does is piss me off, and I don't want to hear it. You know what, everyone who keeps calling me a pussy is...

D&D 4E 5E as a Rewritten 4E with Flavor Bits from Other Editions?

Well, we know that's the case with minis, so I guess we'll see. I'm hoping that there will be more customization on the level of simplicity than just "we've pre-picked your choices for you". That's why I didn't like 4e Essentials at all, since it just removed character customization without...

    Tweet gleanings

I am definately in favour of the PHB being the most vanilla form of D&D you can possibly imagine. Those that want to experiment with D&D and want extra options will always be willing to pay a little more for options, while those that want a minimalist experience will be turned off of the new...

D&D 4E 5E as a Rewritten 4E with Flavor Bits from Other Editions?

No, because the power system is gone, roles are gone, standard conditions are gone, and I think healing surges are gone as well. You can't take away all of those things and still call it a repackaged 4e. That's what the entire system is built on.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e fireballs

I don't know. 4e managed to handle spellcasters that did more damage than the fighter without the fighter being jealous. Warlocks and Sorcerers did far more damage than the fighter, but the fighter had an equally important job and an equal degree of power in the party. So I think the problem...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

The problem is of course that the idea that hp doesn't represent physical wounds went over like a lead balloon. When people talk about a successful hit, they almost universally describe it as a physical injury. Fire burns, arrows pierce, and swords stab. When people recover from hp loss...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

I'm not sure if simply taking away excess healing will do that. I think there has to be some change in what we do, rather than just going back to 1e. The reason they changed healing up in 3e and 4e was because the model doesn't work for a lot of people. I agree with you to a point but...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

Sure, but take the wand of cure light wounds away, and you are back to the 15 min. adventuring day.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e fireballs

I hope not. Lighting bolts are supposed to have the electric current take the path of least resistance to the ground, not bounce off walls. Bouncing lightning bolts ruin verisimilitude.
