    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

Another advantage of this form of multiclassing is it makes it easier for the DM to have themed campaigns because if everyone takes two feats, everyone can have the same utility power (especially movement powers). If you want to make flying really important, or breating under water, or...

Dimishing Return within Roles and Multiclassing

Thanks! I agree, "situational" and "bread and butter" are good terms - probably better than "linear" and "diminishing". I also think you're right that what is situational depends on the character, but at the level of classes/roles certain kinds of powers are going to be mostly situational...

Magical Items and the % split One thing that I don't think has come up: since the devs have suggested that the major role of magical items is to grant new powers, we should be counting those powers when we assess whether a Fighter/Wizard "feels" like a 50/50 split. I'm guessing some (many?)...

Dimishing Return within Roles and Multiclassing

In the multiclassing thread many people have been talking about whether one power from class/role A is "as good" as one power from class/role B. Ari made the point that the between class "balance" of powers is in the context of that class/role. A Wizard and a Fighter are balanced in the sense...

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

There is a difference between balanced overall, and equally good in every circumstance. Suppose there are 3 types of encounters: A, B and C. In your typical campaign, they occur with equal frequency. Suppose Wizards and Cleric each have three powers. Wizard 1 is Excellent if A, Poor...

Guessing at Paragon Level Multiclassing Given the structure of the Paragon Path benefits, perhaps we can guess how the paragon-level multiclassing works. For Paragon Paths you get 11th: Paragon Feature, Action Point option, Paragon Encounter Power 12th: Paragon Utility Power 16th: Paragon...

Important! Interview opportunity - what do you want to know about the GSL?

Well, the optimistic take could be that things are back open for discussion. If they had intended a poison pill, they may be thinking about taking it back out (perhaps based on the reaction).

Important! Interview opportunity - what do you want to know about the GSL?

Thanks for doing this! Any sense of when we might expect to hear WotC's answers?

    New GSL Announcement

Well, this seems to suggest that mxyzplk submitted his blog post to slashdot, which eventually made it a FPP. So it's not like somebody just stumbled across his blog.

Important! Interview opportunity - what do you want to know about the GSL?

Is the GSL a perpetual license, or is it revocable by WotC? If it is revocable, is it revocable case-by-case or globally (or both)?

    New GSL Announcement

Also, since WotC has copyrighted the wording of the OGL, if anyone wants to create a new OGL-like open license for games they'll need to write a new one thats sufficiently different from the OGL.

    New GSL Announcement

Unknown - we don't know if the "you must choose" clause is specific to the OGL, or is written to apply to any open license. However, since most people think WotC's concerns relate to 3.X and all the content that is related to it through the OGL, my guess is they probably wouldn't try to rule...

    GSL news.

Depends if the "one open license per company" rule is a result they specifically want for its own sake, or an unavoidable side effect of avoiding some other OGL/GSL problem (e.g. if the same legal entity having rights under both the OGL and the GSL causes some problem).

    GSL news.

Epoch: I asked this in the OGL forum - how hard would it be to set up such a subsidiary? Is it just a matter of 10 hours of a lawyer's time, or would that be a real big pain to do? Obviously the marketing would be a different issue. Though if Paizo gets to put its name on it's joint products...

    New GSL Announcement

I have a question for publishing company owners. Suppose the "one open license per company" clause of the GSL were such that if you created a wholly owned subsidiary company to technically be the licensee for the GSL you and your staff could still produce and sell (different) OGL and GSL...

    New GSL Announcement

It may matter if you want to publish your own system under the OGL, or if you just want to publish it in a closed manner (or under a non-OGL open license). If the latter was okay with you, then I'd have to imagine the GSL would allow it. To do otherwise would be equivalent to saying "once you...

    New GSL Announcement

Well, in a way it is relevant. There are multiple ways of making the open gaming proposition. The OGL/STL offered use of a system in exchange for very few restrictions, and access to a new brand (that turned out not to have much value) for some more restrictions. The GSL (we believe) offers...

    New GSL Announcement

This seems the most important aspect of this debate. Each game system is enriched by the ongoing investment of finite design/development resources. I think its quite reasonable to think that there is a synergy in quality and usability between products. For example, campaign worlds are...

    New GSL Announcement

Well, if you want to "make a difference", probably the best way to get Scott/Linae to listen and have something fruitful to take to the internal WotC meetings is to say "It's really important that the GSL allows X, Y and Z for the following reasons. Implying that the people you want to...

    New GSL Announcement

Hi Scott. Perhaps an answer to this example would help clarify things. I know you can't talk in too much detail, but this seems general enough, and non-corner enough that you might be able to say. Would this be allowed by the new GSL? XYZ Inc. is an RPG publisher, and during 2007 had a d20...
