D&D General Greyhawk: Spy v. Spy

I’ve decided the inn the PC’s are going to stay at has Spy v. Spy drama for the PC’s to discover or perhaps be victims of. The spies are operating independently and may or may not have discovered each other’s work. They may be opposite goals or just different. The inn is in Thornward, Bissel...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

That’s one of many ways Darlene’s drawing is better.

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

I like Darlene's drawing better in every way.

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

I'm reading some of the other threads, but they are overwhelming and repetitive. Snarf threads are more fun.

D&D General D&D is ruined forever! (humor)

Editions I don't like. Everyone agrees, those are the worst.

D&D General The Human Side of D&D History - From Gary Gygax to Temple of Elemental Evil

I assume the pig nose 🐽 orcs had skin colors like pigs 🐖 , who vary a bit but are mostly pinkish pale, AKA white among humans. And green orcs are green, no? Good question. Internet discussion of a fantasy game seems prone to nonsensical battles that make faculty arguments seem tame. I admire...

D&D General The Human Side of D&D History - From Gary Gygax to Temple of Elemental Evil

I spoke a lot with Col_Playdoh here, but never met him in person. At one point, he was posting more to me than anyone else - I looked it up. He was, in my impression, a very nice, opinionated, and irascible person. Significant events my recollection, all here if people want to check the...

Real economics in D&D - I love it.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E economics -The Peasants are revolting!

The 1 sp per day standard for unskilled labor. Which means 1 sp in D&D = $1 in the Old West, which of course was a silver coin. I’ve been using that method since the 1990’s when I was running Boot Hill and AD&D. I don’t remember the source. Perhaps the original DMG.

Me too. And I think the standard D&D economics are a good starting point.

D&D General The D&D Multiverse: Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die

I was very disappointed by 2e.

Planescape The Planar Trade Consortium as a campaign villain

What are they trading? It has be something missing but wanted somewhere, and available cheaper somewhere. I said that obvious point because I have seen D&D settings where X place is exporting silver, Y place is exporting gold, and Z place silver again. Which is like saying, “China sends...

D&D General The D&D Multiverse: Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die

1e was very different from 2e.

D&D General The D&D Multiverse: Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die

I was there, man. A key point is concerns with “balance” between player characters wasn’t a thing in AD&D. If Stephen Colbert’s character in your party got the laser rifle, great - less chance of TPK. And it would run out of charges - because logistics from wargaming were still part of the...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

I’ll give away my foolproof plan for free: claim Ravenloft under the Guano Islands Act. Nobody lives in Ravenloft, no country claims ownership of Ravenloft, and the fiction includes bats, so there should be guano. Can’t miss, right?

Oooh, Keynes! Snarf is so smart, he knows a quote I know. And anybody who knows a quote I know … ipso facto must be a genius, like me. :p

    D&D 5E (2024) Greyhawk 2024: comparing Oerth and Earth

Not that is what we’re talking about (I think?) but short history on this: The Nazis sneak attacked Norway in 1940. The Royal family fled to the UK, and via Sweden to the US. (There’s a PBS series about this and the Crown Princess’s friendship with FDR called “Atlantic Crossing”.) The...

    D&D 5E (2024) Greyhawk 2024: comparing Oerth and Earth

The SB are, perhaps, genocidal. Certainly evil and racist. But, that’s one Suel country … all Suel are the same is an assumption I don’t see in Greyhawk. Nor for the other ethnicities.

    Willow?

If it’s like video games, the usage falls a ton after the first year, but the tail goes on for years. An actor I know still gets (a little) money from streaming from 1 episode she was in like a decade ago on a long gone show. But residuals mean people are watching, so you’d think the streamer...
