King Kubrick: Ranking Stanley's Best Films

I would say the best Vietnam War movies are: - “Full Metal Jacket”, if you want some feel for being a 19 year old going to a war. - “Platoon”, if you want to see an older person’s literary retrospective take on the war. - “Apocalypse Now”, if you want to update “The Heart of Darkness” (great...

D&D General How Much D&D Stuff Is There Anyway? Part 1: Editions

Yes, that was one of the first things I noticed on 4e launch. I went to the launch event in Seattle, but I was not a 4e fan within 48 hours of launch!

TSR Temple of Elemental Evil - Waterside Hostel

    3) Center background. Wizard and fighter negotiating with the bald merchant. 4) Bar, back group. Two river pirates. The guy in black is a cult operative making a deal with them.

TSR Temple of Elemental Evil - Waterside Hostel

Some ideas on the customers … 1) Upper right table. Two human barbarians looking for work as mercenaries. 2) Group in the foreground. Hobgoblin fighter, half-elf rogue/wizard, and human sorceress/rogue trying to recruit a wandering human ranger, who so far isn’t interested.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you run an open table game in D&D '24?

I jumped into my first real 5e campaign with a 7th level character. I would actually have preferred to start lower - it’s a better way to learn a new edition/new to D&D as a player or DM.

D&D General How Much D&D Stuff Is There Anyway? Part 1: Editions

I was shocked to learn (from reading Dungeon) there were collectible cards for 2e circa 1992. I don’t remember that product series at all.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you run an open table game in D&D '24?

Don’t worry about the “must be the same level” complaints online. If your players are having fun, it’s fine. For what it’s worth, in running my three recent or current 3.5e games, I’ve rarely had everyone at the same level. The higher level group over email, which began in AD&D 1e in 1998...

D&D General How Much D&D Stuff Is There Anyway? Part 1: Editions

I still run 3.5e, and I haven’t noticed much produced lately for 3/3.5/PF1, but perhaps I should check again. I have bought a lot of Raging Swan PF1/system neutral stuff, mostly in 2018-2024 though. I particularly enjoy (as a Greyhawk fan) that while Raging Swan isn’t to use GH, their founder...

TSR Temple of Elemental Evil - Waterside Hostel

What about all the other folks? The PC’s in my email game just walked in, but they plan to sleep at “Elmo’s not-so-safe house” (Elmo bought a shack), so I don’t think the parties would cross paths … unless you want to?

I suppose - but those Klingon head ridges?

D&D General How Much D&D Stuff Is There Anyway? Part 1: Editions

So every edition (except Fast-Play) had a lot more 3rd party than 1st party. Huge surge for 3e (3-4x 2e, depending on whether 3/3.5e is ine thing or two), big decline for 4e (less than 25% of 3.5e), then ridiculously large surge for 5e.

D&D General How Much D&D Stuff Is There Anyway? Part 1: Editions

With 3rd party materials, I wonder how it would change? I suspect 3e has the most 3rd party materials.

AD&D 1E Greyhawk: Who kidnapped Prince Thrommel?

The Scarlet Brotherhood hired by Nyrond could fit in with this Living Greyhawk Gazetteer story about Nyrond's post CY 576 history: In the fall of 585 CY, King Archbold appeared to suffer a stroke. Clerics from around the land convened in Rel Mord, finally determining that he had been poisoned...

D&D General Forgotten Realms - why do you still like running games here? +

I heard they shrunk FR later? Or maybe that was only the part they allocated to Kara-Tur?

TSR Temple of Elemental Evil - Waterside Hostel

Who do you think the patrons in the picture are? The barman, the guy with eyepatch, the server, and the distant server in back are NPC's described in detail in the module, and the OAR version, and the 2003 video game version. The patrons are not described - other than generally a mix of...

D&D General Forgotten Realms - why do you still like running games here? +

Yeah. From my POV, Greyhawk is a bunch of medieval kingdoms - and a few city states - always on the brink of war with each other. As one does in medieval times. Whereas my uninformed impression of FR is that it's mostly about the City-States of the Sword Coast, which seem to me to be like...

D&D General Forgotten Realms - why do you still like running games here? +

Very similar to why I prefer and stick with Greyhawk, except I started D&D with AD&D in 1982, and you started with 2e about a decade later. The much more massive library of FR materials is one reason my curiosity about “what is everyone doing over there” hasn’t led me to get involved. FR feels...
