I jumped into my first real 5e campaign with a 7th level character. I would actually have preferred to start lower - it’s a better way to learn a new edition/new to D&D as a player or DM.

I was shocked to learn (from reading Dungeon) there were collectible cards for 2e circa 1992. I don’t remember that product series at all.

Don’t worry about the “must be the same level” complaints online. If your players are having fun, it’s fine. For what it’s worth, in running my three recent or current 3.5e games, I’ve rarely had everyone at the same level. The higher level group over email, which began in AD&D 1e in 1998...

So every edition (except Fast-Play) had a lot more 3rd party than 1st party. Huge surge for 3e (3-4x 2e, depending on whether 3/3.5e is ine thing or two), big decline for 4e (less than 25% of 3.5e), then ridiculously large surge for 5e.

With 3rd party materials, I wonder how it would change? I suspect 3e has the most 3rd party materials.
