    D&D 5E (2014) Tying PC Backgrounds Together

We did what I usually do these days, a big relationship map. Discussing how to tie the characters and important NPCs/places together gives a very solid ground to stand on. The visual part brings forth new ideas, and seeing the other PCs relations inspires. See to it that everyone brings their...

D&D 5E (2014) We are betting a LOT on the DMG.... will it deliver?

I doubt there will be much, but I still have hope to see some serious henchpeople rules.

D&D 5E (2014) We are betting a LOT on the DMG.... will it deliver?

Compared to your long list it will certainly 'underperform'. But I think it will be a good book. Judging from what else I've seen it will be a very good book. And I think it'll have most of what I expect.

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item Costs in 5E

Because they spend money on more soldiers instead of getting +1 to hit and damage on one of them? I do think nobles have magic weapons. Appropriate to them, not a +2 flail. But I do not think they are ready to buy them en masse. One is enough. Ten soldier are better than one with a +2 flail...

D&D 5E (2014) Think we will get any updates to basic DM stuff before the actual DM guide comes out?

I believe Mearls said that we'd probably get an update when the DMG has been released.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Contagion OP?

Had it required concentration, like Flesh to Stone, I might agree with it being a combat spell. Now, it doesn't. (Unlike Hold Monster.) That makes it an awful lot more powerful.

    D&D 5E (2014) Hell leadership change.

A lot of other similar changes were made, more than in any previous edition. What Orcus was and where he lived, for instance. What the abyss was. But 4e wasn't alone. All for the sake of discontinuity. Thrashing the realms must have seemed like a great idea to the Greenwood, Salvatore, et al.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e death and consequences?

There's a reason there's no monetary cost is given for spells above 2nd level cast by NPCs in the PHB. The 'cost' discussed there is favours and good will - you don't earn that as easily. I'm hoping the DMG suggests the divine spell limits from the 1st ed DMG. Spells of 1-2nd level were given...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hell leadership change.

What I really dislike about these changes is that they do not add anything - it's just change for the sake of change. There's no point, that I can see.

D&D 5E (2014) If party short rests in a dungeon room

I remember an old TPK of mine (I was on the receiving end... thankfully, I think). Suddenly, in town, a weretiger appears. I can't remember the details, I do think the party's thief tried to pickpocket it, but let us just say that it left no PC behind. Thanks, city encounter tables in 1e DMG...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Contagion OP?

Paraxis, the rules are written by humans, not gods. And they have a lot of things to do. I'm fairly certain that there'll be a clarification. In due time. Meanwhile we have our (or are) DMs to adjudicate.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Contagion OP?

You can be sick without serious symptoms. Happens to me all the time, and often I fight it off. This is a poorly worded spell, so you'll have to decide how to read it. You pick: a) Does it work akin to Flesh to Stone (but without concentrating), or b) is it weirdly overpowered? You be the DM!

D&D 5E (2014) If party short rests in a dungeon room

Killing PCs with wandering monsters is no fun for anybody. They are there to disturb the peace (and rests) for the PCs and wear down their resources. It is there to force them to plan for the unexpected. Unexpected that it is not entirely dependent on the GM's whims, but sheer chance. It is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Item Costs in 5E

And that, exactly, is why there should be no prices given. It is not the PC who decides to sell - it is for the noble to decide he needs a flail. And what in the deepest pits of the abyss does a noble want a +1 flail for? You can't wear it to the ball. And what noble fights with a peasant...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Contagion OP?

Indeed. Sadly poorly worded, though. Possibly the word 'afflict' has a distinct meaning regarding diseases that will be in the DMG.

D&D 5E (2014) If party short rests in a dungeon room

A quick look at some old adventures tell me that in Steading of the Hill Giant Chief (1st ed,), wandering monsters occurred between 1-in-8 to 1-in-12 depending on the area. But it does not say how often to roll. Once every turn (10min) sounds good, looking at the busy area adn the type of...

D&D 5E (2014) If party short rests in a dungeon room

Random rolls are perfect to keep the PCs on their toes - they never know what'll happen. They're are thus encouraged to find a safe spot, say by becoming friends with the goblins next door. Perfect for sandboxing. And it makes Rope Trick really handy.

D&D 5E (2014) If party short rests in a dungeon room

Many old dungeons included a chance for a a random encounter, and an appropriate encounter table, for the specific dungeon. I think 10% chance for a wandering encounter every hour was about the standard.

D&D 5E (2014) What happend to Know Alignment and Detect EVIL OMG !

Note that it is actually only in 3e that detect evil works on mundane evil creatures. In AD&D2 it is stated explicitly in the spell description that normal evil beings are not detected. The same is stated in the 1e DMG. It did work on a high level evil priest, though.

    D&D 5E (2014) Morale Rules?

Thank you for giving me yet another argument for why XP for killing stuff is bad. And XP has always been (supposed to, at least) warded for defeating the opposition. Routing them is defeating. (And exactly what level of advancement is your game geared to? You can shift it if you want.)
