How To Kill An Adult Black Dragon Without Dying Of Boredom

Well, interesting terrain can't by itself make an encounter interesting unless it's "interactive terrain." In this case, the encounter took place in the courtyard of a "fortress". There were ledges along the inside of the courtyard but only the Dragon could really use them, being the only...

How To Kill An Adult Black Dragon Without Dying Of Boredom

As the numbers I posted show, you're right on target. Using the above method to calculate DPR with just at-wills and no buffs or de-buffs, the party has an average DPR of 20.375. With the dragon's hit point total of 560 it'd take them 27 rounds to kill it. Not so good, since as I said combat...

How To Kill An Adult Black Dragon Without Dying Of Boredom

Ahhh. You are correct!! Of course, that makes executing this strategy much more difficult. Now all the dragon needs to do is soak the OA from the fighter and then convert its standard to a move. Or use one of its TWO action points to move.

How To Kill An Adult Black Dragon Without Dying Of Boredom

At the end of last weekend's game session I matched my party (5 10th level 4E characters) against an adult black dragon. Here's my experience: As promised, combat was very mobile. In particular, I could see why the dragon is a "lurker." The dragon was able to use its ability to create darkness...

Wizard wanted to use mage hand to take a weapon

Ehhh. I don't see what the big deal is. Int Attack vs. Reflex just to "hit" and then an opposed Int vs. Str opposed ability check to see if it works. Requires a standard action to do and a move action if the hand isn't adjacent.

    Marketing criticisms miss the point

Wait. What?!? This is entirely orthogonal to the situation as I understand it. WotC could give a rodent's behind about the RPGA as the driver for future market growth. The POINT of the new edition (to boil it down to basics) is to make the game "cool" enough again so that people who aren't...

    Marketing criticisms miss the point

OMG. This almost makes me want to take "Hong" with his 30,000+ posts off ignore.

We owned Rob Heinsoo last night

Here here. Having played and ran the game for a couple of hours now, it's really easy to see that there's a lot of situations that are intentionally left ambiguous or simply not described with crunch. I was pretty upset/freaked out about this at first. I too had gotten used to the 3E paradigm...

What CAN'T you do with 4e?

This is actually fairly easy to accomplish. Basically, create "rituals" for all his undead minions and then change all the power damage types to necrotic, acid, cold and psychic. Of course, also be sure that when he dies the castle collapses and destroys his rituals. Wouldn't want the players to...

    Campaign pitch too intimidating?

I would reccomend you read the first couple of chapter of the new 4E DMG. They've got a lot of good stuff there. Basically though, make sure that the first adventure thematically fits with who you know the BBEG to be. Also, don't be afraid to drop pretty strong hints in your campaign handout...

    New Campaign Questionnaire

It's certainly a very thorough questionnaire. I suspect mine would think it was too much work. Why not just talk about with them at the next game session?

Anyone Else Run A Solo Yet?

I faced off against my players with an Adult Black Dragon (Lvl 11 Solo Lurker). Now, I want to compare notes!

Ray of Frost and Cloud of Daggers; Red Headed Stepchildren of Wizard At-Wills?

Yeah, but a lot of those don't really scream "use me so the Wizard can fire off a magic missile." Maybe in some sort of situation where you desperately need to keep a creature from fleeing but only the wizard has the range. Hard to imagine that'll happen often enough to counter a different power...

    Tracking

Well . . . just because there's flavor text in the class description doesn't mean there has to be corresponding crunch. Perhaps that tells you right there why there aren't any specific tracking rules in the core books. The designers think a class should have an ability, so they mention it in...

4th edition random dungeon generation? (and solo play)

Uhhhh. There's a whole section on how to do it in the back of the DMG. There's even rules for how to work it so that everyone can play and no one has to DM.

    Smudges - All Core books

I've noticed it in all three books. Noticed it with the DMG first. It's not as much of a problem if you've just washed your hands, so I suspect it's the oils in the skin that are the culprit. Also, I've had my copies of the 3.5 core books for a couple of years now, and while I'm sure it's...

    My Ink Runneth Over

Ahh. I've noticed it with all three books now, starting with the DMG about three weeks ago. Seems to be less of a problem if my hands are freshly washed. I suspect the ink may be soluble in oil even after printing. That's sort of a problem.

So what are you going to play with 4e?

Swashbuckley island hopping campaign with a "Primordial Threat" theme.

Has anyone else noticed that the print in the core books smears very very easily?
