D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

We ran a 10th level skill check today as part of the mini-adventure I'm running them through. I did not include the +5 to Skill Check DC's, as I hadn't seen the foot-note the rest of you are talking about. Even then, they barely succeeded and only after a bunch of them started to aid some of the...

    Cleric With A Wisdom of 8 . . .

Wait. So we can actually DO the Cavalier from the D&D cartoon now?

I just want to see if this gets any bites . . .

    Length of Combat

Yep. Were at about an hour for each actual combat encounter. The second was faster than the first so I have high hopes it'll get better. Oh, and as the DM? Total effing murder. I immediately started telling the players what I was and was no longer responsible for.

    Blade Cascade Unleashed!

Yep. From PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, a 4 level difference between monster and character can mean a LOT. At this point, I've only seen monsters that are four levels lower than characters but the results aren't pretty. The characters hardly miss and the monsters barely hit. I'll know how things look...

    D&D is Back!

Yeah. This is the first thread I've read since I left town the day before "The Sign of the Beast Two Doors Down." My first thought?

What happened in 2001 and why'd the non-linear adventures cease?

D&D 4E D&D 4e: A Fun, Fast Game that will Eat Your Paycheck

I've been over the books a fair amount and there's definitely a clarity issue of some sort. Not sure why though. Half the time it's like the relevant rule is in a weird place and the other half it's just that the actual sentence or paragraph construction is poor.

    Healing Potions seem woeful

Correct!!! Yeah, but as I recall, the context of the quote was more that you NEEDED those +1 bonuses because the other choice was death. Basically, every +1 is more important. I suppose what you're talking about and how it ties into game balance explains how they were able to generate this...

    Healing Potions seem woeful

Oh. Is this what everyone's collapsing on the fainting couches over? I should check out the numbers in the "Ranger Is New God Of Damage Thread."

D&D 4E An in depth rules discussion on the mechanical problems and breakthroughs of 4e

Can't speak for Sadrik, but I estimate I've spent: 6 hours reading the books (read the DMG from start to finish. 1st time ever for me) 10 hours designing 5 10th level pregen characters 6 hours designing an adventure for said characters 4 hours DM'ing the first two encounters of said adventure 4...

    Healing Potions seem woeful

See, this is sort of what I expect. Some of the new rules look a little wonky but I figure they'll make sense once I see them in action. Fer instance, I've heard (from you perhaps) that characters scrabble for every +1 bonus to attack and damage they can get. This makes all the seemingly piddly...

    Healing Potions seem woeful

... you should consider the "flee" option?

    Healing Potions seem woeful

Yeah, uhhhh . . . healing surges for 10th level characters are in the range of 15 to 20 points. 25 hit points from a potion at level 7 is a big deal. I think people should try this out before making house rules. It's entirely possible that once you're actually playing 4E, you'll discover that...

    Astral Fire

There are a lot of strength based cleric powers that do radiant or fire damage. It's just as useful for those as it is for the wisdom based cleric powers.

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

Fair enough. But, given how much huffing and puffing was done in the designer blogs and the marketing material about removing restrictions, I would've thought they'd done away with it entirely. They slaughtered so many sacred cows at this point, why bother giving the various races ability score...

    Cleric With A Wisdom of 8 . . .

Yeah, but then it's not as funny. :) I did it on purpose. If the point buy method in the PHB had allowed me to lower the score further I would have dropped wisdom all the way to 3. Near as I can tell, the cleric is the only class that let's you do this. Other classes have attack powers based...

    Cleric With A Wisdom of 8 . . .

No no. The first guy is correct. You're thinking of monsters. A monster's ability score mode is the base modifier plus 1/2 its level. The wisdom bonus being +1 is a typo. I don't believe I factored it into any of the attack mods for the powers. Fer example, with Turn Undead: Bonus for level...

    Cleric With A Wisdom of 8 . . .

Well, you're still getting a nice boost to your hit points. Just not as much as you'd get from a cleric with a wisdom bonus. :)

    Astral Fire

Okay. So here's my pet theory. What's the name of the cold/acid damage boosting feat? Why, it just happens to be "burning blizzard." What's a vaguely synonymistic (I love coining new words) way of saying "burning blizzard?" Why, that would be "Emerald Frost," if you assume that acid is always...
