    Cleric With A Wisdom of 8 . . .

As near as I can tell, it's do-able. I put together a 5th level dragonborn cleric and posted the relevant bits below. As you can see, the only downside is a sub-par ability to turn undead, no benefit (a -1 penalty in fact!) from the "healing lore" class ability and sucky passive perception and...

Is 4E coherent, incoherent or abashed? (RPG theory stuff inside)

This is easy enough to fix though. Just give them a harder encounter but limit the XP to what they would have gotten from the easier encounter. As the DM, you'd be well within your rights to do this. I think the more difficult part of success vs. failure in a D&D game that wants to have a story...

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

That's a first level character? How are you getting two scores to 8? But yeah, there's nothing that says you can't focus on wisdom and ignore strength and charisma. OR You could ignore wisdom entirely and focus on strength and charisma as follows: Dunkelkurk the Not-So-Wise 5th level...

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

Hah hah. Yeah. I think the regulars here tend to misunderestimate me. So here's the break down for the cleric class: Total Powers - 57 (not counting utility, channel divinity, paragon or epic powers) Wisdom vs. Defense powers - 27 Wisdom vs. AC powers - 2 Wisdom provides additional benefit -...

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

When did they ever say they were getting rid of the build mentality? If they did, I imagine what they meant is that retraining is now so easy that you don't really have to worry about what your build is going to in several levels beyond making sure you have the right ability scores at the right...

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

Wait. Neither of you have the books yet? Sheesh. Now I feel really special. I have all three.

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

I take it you have a copy of the PHB in some form? I can't even imagine playing a Cleric that focused almost entirely on powers without the weapon descriptor. Sure you could do it, but it just seems so limiting. Especially when the cleric seems specifically designed to engage in melee combat...

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

That the "weapon" powers were substantially stronger than the non-weapon powers didn't pop off the page at me, but I wasn't really looking for that. I actually figured making that house ruling would be pretty easy, with the only potential problem being that the game now seems to EXPECT cleric's...

    Is Forced Movement Inherently Breakable?

Ah. Thanks for the heads up about the pertinent rules in the DMG. So in the case of a power that does damage if a creature leaves a square, forced movement would allow a save even though it isn't specifically "hindering terrain?" I still haven't seen a rule that disallows those sorts of combos.

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

Well, but aren't the warlock and the wizard the only two classes that are by default not expected to ever use their actual weapons? I felt bad for the player of my cleric though. He had a cool character in 3E that chucked javelins when making an attack was his best option. He can't do that in...

    Musings on the skill system

I'm not very upset about the seriously pared down skill list, since I've found that it's a lot easier now to incorporate skills into the game. Not sure exactly why this is, but I think it was something to do with adding half your level into your skill check modifier. This tends to keep the...

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

Oh, and it has occurred to me at various points that the PHB may have been designed to be somewhat thin. The idea being that this will effectively force groups to adopt and use the splatbooks and future core PHB's. It's either that or you get bored doing the same thing over and over again...

    D&D 4E 4e, Non-Martial Characters, and Limited Feat Choices

I put together a party of five 10th level pre-gens for my group so that I could run them through a couple of 4E encounters before they decided whether or not to switch. The composition was as follows: Human Warlock Elf Paladin Hafling Rogue Human Cleric Hobgoblin Fighter I noticed the feat...

    Is Forced Movement Inherently Breakable?

What thread? I'm still trying to find the rules verbiage that pertains.

    Is Forced Movement Inherently Breakable?

Heh heh. I haven't seen that one yet. I had one player scoffing last session when another player's 3 ft. haflingn character pushed a shadow hound 20 feet. I tend to DM standing up, so I was able to visually show everyone what a medium creature stumbling backwards for 20 feet looked like. It was...

The reason the books feel incomplete

Well no, I think the OP is correct. There's just a crucial caveat that got left off, it being "if you want the mix of monsters in the encounter to make sense." I've only put together four encounters at 10th level and I can already see this. It's not hard to figure out why. Let's say I have an...

Now you're thinking with Portals! Abusing Arcane Gate

Well, technically the rule specifically calls out pits and precipices and then references the section on falling damage, where the rule is essentially re-printed. It never calls out or even opens the door to any other negative effect that a character or creature might presumably be forced into...

    Is Forced Movement Inherently Breakable?

When I returned to Enworld yesterday, an interesting thing I noticed were all the cool "broken" combos that people were posting. And this is only with a couple of days of access to the rules. Imagine what we can accomplish with an entire year and several splatbooks under our belt!! In many...

    Core Handbook Errors Discussion

Has anyone else looked at the Paladin Attack 9, Radiant Pulse? I get the general idea of what the power is supposed to do (and even re-wrote it to reflect that for the 10th level pregens I made for my group, but holy heck is the rules verbiage confusing. It's seriously unclear whether the power...

    Core Handbook Errors Discussion

Yo. Fighters get a lot more chances for OA's than other classes and they get to add their wisdom modifier to their OA's. That's a good reason right there.
