Worlds of Design: How D&D is Like American Football

For whatever it's worth whoever at Square came up with the active time battle system used in Final Fantasy 4 through 9 was inspired by American football and used that analogy to explain it, including, IIRC, in the patent application.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the most played published adventure on your table?

Pharaoh, I suppose, that being the only one I've attempted to run more than once. Nothing in 5E.

Level Up (A5E) Level Up: An issue of class names

Herald sounds more like a Bard replacement minus the musical theme. It doesn't say "Paladin" to me at all and there isn't a single alternative suggestion in this thread that I don't like better.

Official News Let’s Look At The Level Up Character Sheet

I'm still not seeing a principled difference between Athletics and Acrobatics that isn't either Str vs Dex or "because we've always done it this way". Why couldn't those be Athletics checks? What is gained by making it a separate skill? I'm especially puzzled by your second example. Climbing is...

Official News Let’s Look At The Level Up Character Sheet

It seems to me this is just a way of saying Acrobatics should always be tied to Dexterity and Athletics should always be tied to Strength. But we know that's not what they're doing. Here's a couple questions that may help you see where the person you're replying to is coming from. Can you...

With how many people have of role-played with since your first game?

Probably about 100, but I went with "90-99" because I feel like the answer is probably a lot closer to 90 than to 150 if I'm choosing between ranges that include those numbers. I haven't kept an exact count and it would be a hopeless endeavour to try to create one now.

D&D General UPDATE: this isn't greenlit : Jeff Grubb's Lost Mystara Sourcebook To Be Released

I actually liked it better wrong, in some ways! The one you originally linked is really important too, and gives a lot of context to the one you meant.

D&D General UPDATE: this isn't greenlit : Jeff Grubb's Lost Mystara Sourcebook To Be Released

Actually, he detailed the state he left the book in is a different post, a follow-up to the one you linked, namely this one.

D&D General UPDATE: this isn't greenlit : Jeff Grubb's Lost Mystara Sourcebook To Be Released

Jeebus. One of the most purely good-news stories I can think of in quite some time, and the very first comment is someone trying to claim it's actually all doom-and-gloom.

D&D 5E (2014) Survivor 5e Adventure Books - Yawning Portal lives to tell it's Tale!

This is the first of these Survivor threads I've noticed that I can actually see the point of. You can only run so many adventures and so this is a thought process someone might actually have a practical reason to go through. Eliminating (for example) all but one class from a game designed to...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone else feel like the action economy and the way actions work in general in 5e both just suck?

I haven't read nearly all 26 pages of replies, so maybe this point has already been made, but why assume it's a question of time, rather than, say, effort, or how different magical energies interact, or which things it is and isn't physically possible to do simultaneously? If this is a major...

D&D 5E (2014) In a (hypothetical) Tales from the Yawning Portal 2, what are the adventures you would want updated for 5E?

An important point most of the replies seem to have overlooked, or perhaps in a few cases might be consciously ignoring. So you could maybe do something like: Rahasia Night's Dark Terror Desert of Desolation trilogy original Drow trilogy Labyrinth of Madness And have it more or less work...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E boxed sets.

So far most people are comparing the two "main" ones that are designed to give a mainstream D&D experience. Anyone in a position to say how the Stranger Things one compares? That was also passingly mentioned in the OP. (There's actually a fourth one, as someone also mentioned. However, I don't...

D&D 4E Anyone playing 4e at the moment?

To just answer the question in the thread title, around the beginning of the pandemic I started running Zeitgeist online under 4E. This is the reason for my recent return to being semi-active here, hardly a regular but I'm back to making more than just three comments a year or so. We're maybe a...

D&D General The Rules Cyclopedia - Unlearning Dnd Preconceptions from a 3e player

Intellectually I understand that this is the case, but I can never really grok why. Subtracting a negative number is literally just addition. If anything it's easier than subtracting a positive number!

D&D General The Rules Cyclopedia - Unlearning Dnd Preconceptions from a 3e player

It's accurate. Holmes basic is vastly different from B/X and BECMI. As someone else pointed out above, this was particularly true with respect to alignment, of which Holmes had five in a system that was never used in any other version of D&D. You'd be on much firmer ground with just B/X, but...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e and the Cheesecake Factory: Explaining Good Enough

I know I've been saying that since shortly after it came out, and I don't intend it as a joke. Though some people do find the observation amusing. (Especially when someone initially misses the point, and asks "what's the first?", eliciting the answer "that varies, but the second is nearly always...

D&D General The Rules Cyclopedia - Unlearning Dnd Preconceptions from a 3e player

"Still"? AD&D 1st Edition predates BECMI, as others have already gone over in more detail. This particular compilation came out about the same time 2nd Edition started, but even the original boxed sets it compiled were from several years after the three core AD&D1 books. The later ones were...
