    Who is at Gameholecon?!

Well I was. Sorry I missed everyone! It was a great time as usual. Another die for my Gamehole dice collection. It’s the best Con I go to every year (although that list is getting a bit thin).

    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

One of the things I've found with creating characters in Draw Steel is that it is very much not generic fantasy. For someone who's been playing RPGs since the 70s, I appreciate it. For people who are new to the hobby, it may be difficult because there are kinds of characters that the game has...

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

This is a really interesting question. I think the big issue is the 60 sessions. That's going to mean the game has to allow for significant progression over time. PF2 is a good example of something I could see for that, as is D&D of just about any flavor. I'd love to say 13th Age or something...

D&D General What version of D&D are you playing?

I am genuinely surprised with my group that's playing a 5E game and just started the Vecna adventure. I thought it was "let's finish this campaign and then update" but the group has said they're staying with 5E and not going to 5.5. Interesting.

Starbreeze Cancels Co-Op D&D Video Game

Another project goes on the wall of failed D&D console/PC games. At this point, I'm more shocked when a title actually gets released. I put in my Gene Wilder Willy Wonka costume whenever I hear a new pitch from WotC about how they're going to have the next great computer game. I'm just sorry for...

    Fabula Ultima general thread [+]

There is a current module, Project FU. Details about it are here, but you can load it directly from a search in the Foundry app. I have played around with it, but I've always been lucky enough to run Fabula Ultima in person. I wish I could tell you more about the module, but it looks nice, and...

Daggerheart Class Packs kickstarter is live.

This is a sad case of everyone involved being married with kids. Finding the time to get everyone into is a high Tier challenge. I'm going to try, of course. I'm also giving the Kickstarter out to all of the players to perhaps make them think about the class they're going to play, so it's likely...

Which "Tactical" TTRPG Would Work Best As An X-Com Like?

While I haven't played it, Ultramodern4 is a game for modern tactical combat using 4E assumptions, so that would likely handle what you're looking for.

Daggerheart Class Packs kickstarter is live.

This one is an unfortunate victim of timing. I'm just starting a campaign and my players would definitely back to get the PDF of the game + their class pack ... but we're not started yet.

    Fabula Ultima general thread [+]

One of my favorite things about Fabula Ultima, and something that I recommend people in other games take a look at, is the Ritual system. The core spells for characters are entirely encounter/combat based. The Ritual system is for everything else. I really like how you can work out how powerful...

    Fabula Ultima general thread [+]

Just to make one more comment on the cutscene mechanic. In the first chapter of Final Fantasy Tactics, you have a scene with your character where they are chewed out for being heroic. The scene continues after the group leaves, and you find out that a character who you think is an ally is really...

    Fabula Ultima general thread [+]

Final Fantasy Tactics just released for PC, so I'm getting a chance to relive it. That game is full of cutscenes where you find out what the villains are up to long before you actually meet them. Fabula Ultima is trying to be that sort of game. It's emulating the source material. You can...

Which "Tactical" TTRPG Would Work Best As An X-Com Like?

I'm not sure, but the most important thing is to lie about probabilities! Sure I have a 95% hit chance ... miss every time. No, I'm not bitter.

    Paizo Pathfinder Quest

It makes me sad, but I'm not backing this. I say that as perhaps the biggest fan of Warhammer Quest, and a big fan of Shadows of Brimstone (which uses updated rules but basically the WQ system). When I saw "Pathfinder Quest" I thought ... an update of the classic game to Pathfinder tropes...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

I am so far out of the loop on LitRpgs so I was thinking this was a book that "the kids" are into. I freely admit to being clueless on them. The thing I have noticed, because I do look at these rankings every now and then, is how there's some LitRpg book typically at #1 ... that I've never heard...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

I absolutely don't want to take us down this road again, but Amazon Canada still has sales ranks. When I checked earlier and D&D PHB 2024 was #2 in gaming books and Daggerheart was #3. And their ranks in books were about 200 apart. Take that for what it's worth.

    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

One of the things I really like about Draw Steel was something Matt discussed in the recent video about the different classes. All of the classes have magical abilities. He said they were thinking about a weapon master character, but rolled it into the Tactician because they didn't see what a...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart?

We have had multiple threads and thousands of posts about the good or bad sales for D&D. Other games have the same discussion at a much smaller scale. Do I care about it? Heck no! I regularly buy games where you might be talking dozens of sales. My local group says "you want to run what? Never...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

You may be right. I think it's important to let people know what you're doing as part of game design. I don't think that anyone is going to stumble into Draw Steel with the expectation that it won't require a good deal of engagement, and I think the start of the Heroes book does a good job...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

What you're saying is so true! I've written about this before, but a player in one of my games just doesn't seem to take the time to learn the rules. He's a great guy but it's such a challenge to get his character going. The group played 13th Age before I came into it, but he played a simple...
