    I don't miss the magazines (/ducks)

My use has gone down. I haven't read any article since they went digital - even though I have them saved on my hard drive. I have an intense dislike of reading on screen. I dislike the landscape format for printing - if I printed them out - and until the go to a very print friendly format I...

Dominate: Can you compel free actions?

This question came up in the game I'm playing in. The enemy dominated our characters and then forced us to attack each other then use our action points (free action). Couple this with the interpretation that action point use overrules the "only one action while dazed" and we were pretty well...

    Okay, 'fess up

That's the problem though - I can't follow the themes with the 4E ruleset and arrive at a satisfactory approximation of my previous characters. My 1E druid can't even be approximated. My mutliclass character really don't work, and most of my single class characters are an amalgam of their...

    Okay, 'fess up

Nope - can't really port them into 4E in a way that would make them like the old characters except for their name.

Do You Like "Consolation Prize" Mechanics?

I'm with Stalker0 in that there doesn't seem to be much consolation in the prize. I'd prefer that Daily powers behaved something like encounter powers. If you use one and hit, it can't be reused until after an extended rest. If you use one and miss - you just can't use it again during this...

How long do you spend preparing a game?

We are playing 3.5 w/ pathfinder beta thrown in and the PCs are up to 19th level now. I find I spend 3-4 hours for a 5-6 hour session. At PC levels 10 - 15, I probably spent 2 - 3 hours for a session and below PC level 10, 1 - 2 hours with the exception of the first session or two of the...

    Rules overload for players

I agree with the OP, more or less. We've played from 1st to 12th in the last year. Some of the players are always on the ball, ready to go and know what their powers do. Others don't. This wasn't a problem in the first 7 or so levels, but with retraining, more powers, and more powers that...

(4e) How often do minions appear in your game?

In the game I am playing in we rarely see minions, perhaps 1 out of 10 or 12 encounters. However, our wizard is invaluable. He routinely ties up the bad guys we do fight allowing our strikers to get to the enemy artillery and controllers, and helps our defenders lock down targets so we can focus...

How much controll do you give your players?

As much as they want. I inherited these players from the previous DM when he switched to 4E and none of them went along. No campaign with the previous DM had ever gotten higher than 14th level (and usually ended in a TPK much earlier). I haven't put any restriction on any source book the...

Why do you keep playing 4e?

Because my choice (as player) is 4E or no D&D and because of the other players. The sad thing is I'm finding 4E to be "20 minutes of fun in 4 hours" more than I ever did with 3.X E.

    Starting hit points?

I use my own system for Hit Points Characters use the following formula to determine Hit Points per level. levels 01-04 [Level x Fixed HP] + [Con Score + Con Mod] levels 05-09 [Level x Fixed HP] + [(Con Score + Con Mod) x 2] levels 10-14 [Level x Fixed HP] + [(Con Score + Con Mod) x 3]...

About 3-4 in our 15th level 3.5/pathfinder game and our 6th level 4E game.

Have you run and/or played in a 3e/3.5 game with no rogue?

For the first time in as long as I can remember I am playing in one campaign without a rogue and DMing another. So far it has been off and on tough going in both - taking a lot of damage on the chin because things can't be bypassed or spotted in time. I will say I have played in more games with...

    Design and Development: Monsters

Not really - if you forget to roll the recharge on round 4 or 5 and then do roll the check and fail to get a 5 or 6 on the die in round 6 - you don't get to use the ability. If you forget to mark off a round on round 4 or 5 with the 1d4 rounds between method you know you get to use it on round 6.

    Design and Development: Monsters

This doesn't sound right. If you roll the check every round, what is the chance that the ability (in this case the breath weapon) is available on round 2, 3, 4 etc vs the flat 2 in 6 chance if you only roll when you want to use it? I guess we will have to agree to disagree. rolling once and...

    Design and Development: Monsters

Wouldn't you still roll every round until it recharges? If successful the breathe weapon (or other ability) is available immediately or in any following round. Your post seems to suggest that you are only planning to check when the dragon would try to use it's breath weapon. I am under the...

    Spells with Shapeable Areas

Simple question - I think Do the 10x10 (or 20x20, 5' radius busrst, etc) areas affected by a spell with a shapeable area have to be contiguos? There doesn't seem to be a statement expilicitly saying they do . . . Is this clarified comewhere else, perhaps in complete mage or complete arcane...

D&D 4E Just played my first 4E game

Given that it was an impression the players had about the game play and not an analysis, there's no problem. They don't have to defend it. Its of interest because this impression wasn't caused by 3E when they stated PnP RPGs You don't like it, or don't think their impression is valid, tough.
