"You meet a mysterious stranger in a tavern." Origins?

The inn/tavern provides a reason for people from all these strange places to be there. Players make up a character and there might not be a lot of backstory, but meeting at the inn allows you to have no reason. The world might even be unknown to you and the DM feeds it as you go, but you...

    D&D 5E (2024) Tuning big single creatures into multi-part-creatures.

I like the sticking to only 3 max numbers. When I run combats with more than 3 monster types it places more load on my brain than it is worth usually. I tend to like easy systems to add. This sounds rather easy if the picky parts like AOE spells and stuff can be figures out without nerfing...

    RPG Evolution: The Rolling Frontier

Have to do it for all of us 80s kids with the cool computer with the 40 floppy disks we needed to rotate as we played. In my games I tend to never have settlers moving about. I should since that provides many more opportunities. I tend to just have merchant trains or bandits.

D&D General Sharing my dnd artwork(no AI)

Quite a talent. I like the way the background color draws your focus to the main elements.

D&D 5E (2024) Nothics should speak Common and other languages

My players see a monster that needs to be killed. They hardly ever try to talk with things in a dungeon. They more recently try to talk to things on the road like bandits trying to exhort them out of gold. Maybe some of this is that gold in 5e has less opportunities to use. I'm making an...

D&D General The thunder blessing - 2 generations later

Wouldn't the younger generation be the larger numbers? I get the reference to using Gen XYZ and such but the Boomers were the largest compared to the newer generations. Some ideas for the youthful numbers to want to explore should include reclaiming old homelands. This will place them at...

D&D General Adventurers in Faerun-The Book of Low and Mid Level Adventures?

The problem I would have is that I would need to run another campaign before I get to this one. I would want something that ties in to how the PCs get there. I might never get to play that or I'm waiting for someone to make a 1-10 lead in. The other point in an earlier post was to use...

    D&D General Orcs are misplaced

I'm guessing this is from the new Forgotten Realms (FR) books that just came out. The OP was not clear in mentioning anything.

D&D 5E (2024) Changes to the Command spell and its use at the table.

Sounds terrible with the situation outlined. My players have not used it yet and tend to not play wizards. As a DM, I might let it play out to show the players that eventually it becomes not fun. I might also show them if they do not see it themselves with having 20 cultists cast it on the...

D&D General How often do you use or encounter Dungeons and/or Dragons in your games?

Dungeons all the time. I like smaller locations like a 5-room dungeon or something with 15ish rooms that can be played in a a couple weeks. Dungeons are a bit of a vague term with traditional caverns and crypts to city sewers and warehouses. Dragons tend to be only a couple per campaign...

    RPG Factions

I wish I used factions more. As the DM, I should have the npcs be in more factions to introduce the players and PCs to more options. As a player I would want more options to how the faction is going to influence the game and thus the PC. Being a Harper might be cool, but how does that help...

D&D General Adventurers in Faerun-The Book of Low and Mid Level Adventures?

My players hit level 12 and finished the arc and now are free to pursue what they want. I'm having a problem making things for this level to both challenge them and make it fit with the world. A bandit attack on the road with 50 bandits instead of 5 and I'll throw in a mage with a elemental as...

D&D 5E (2014) Two wizard homebrew mechanics: any unintended consequences?

Other than this, what are you trying to achieve? Everything is frontloaded to level 1 and 2 which go by vest fast. What is stopping people from just taking these 2 levels and then multi-classing to get these bonusses? What would this look like with other spells from other classes? These look...

    D&D 5E (2014) Reverse Time Combat

I might give the next encounter advantage on the initiatives since they already know something is coming. I might base this on how much the players try to get into the spirit of the encounter though. The first round might need to be forced a bit. You want all the Pcs to wake up rom being...

    TTRPG primary school club question

@Illudenerth welcome to the site. There is another thread about this similar with a couple posters running clubs at school that should be a good help. One of the things I use for map making is Christmas Paper that has the 1inch grid on the inside. I can magic marker as big a map as I need...
