What Are You Listening To? - Reprise

Been jamming to the new Coheed and Cambria album, Vaxis Act III: The Father of Make Believe. Act II was very synth-poppy; this one sounds a lot more like their earliest couple of albums to me. I like 'em both. But I'm a sucker for Coheed.

    D&D General Deity stats

The 1e version appeared back in Dragon Magazine long ago. Don't have the issue number, but it was, I believe, the same issue as "The Halfling Point of View" by Roger E. Moore.

D&D General History of Planar Development in AD&D: 1977-1980

Also note that the Para-Elemental Planes envisioned in DDG were not the ones that later became the standard version- you had Heat, Vapor, Dust and Ice, vs. the later Magma, Ooze, Ice, and Smoke.

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

First, I'll say that having the goblins run or surrender IS running the fight to the end. Yes, I usually run the combat until it's done. It matters in terms of resources expended (spell slots, hps, magic item charges, etc). Yes. No. It's not up to me to decide what resources they expend...

Anyone want 44 pages of spells converted to 5e?

It's not impossible, but I'm working hard on my homebrew system at the moment, trying to finish up a bunch of stuff so I can start running it. But I am a fan of sticks to snakes, always loved all those spells taken from the Bible.

Five Takeaways From the 2025 Monster Manual

Yeah, I don't think changing the creature type addresses this issue at all. It just moves the goalposts. I really think 3e had this issue worked out pretty well with its "Often", "Usually", and "Always" alignment header.

That doesn't help those of us who don't want to buy a FR setting product.

Five Takeaways From the 2025 Monster Manual

I think this is a highly suspect approach. Either violence against sentient creatures is problematic, or it's not- the creature's type shouldn't affect that calculus.

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

Ah yes, "boxed text" (as I call it). I love boxed text when done right, hate it when done poorly. Done well, it should convey what you see/sense without making assumptions about what direction you're entering from, what you think or feel, or what you're doing. It should be short and to the...

Keeping the World Dangerous – A Monster Scaling Table for a Sandbox TTRPG?

The whole point of a sandbox (to me) is that the players can, to a greater or lesser degree, choose their level of challenge (and that should impact the rewards they receive). In other words, a low level group avoids the lair of the dragon who lives on Mt. Deathtime, while when they achieve...

D&D General How often do you use Homebrew in your own games?

Constantly. Probably as much or more as I use official material. I have tons of custom subclasses, spells, magic items, and monsters. At least one features in just about every session. More often, there are as many custom bits as official.

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

If you treat alignment language as a subset of language that only lets you talk about the nuances of specific philosophical points of view, it makes a certain amount of sense.... but even then, it works better if you have to share another language before you can speak (e.g.) CN to each other.

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

3e. Alignment was a cosmic force and there were mechanical implications, such as DR that was bypassed by good, lawful, chaotic, or evil weapons, or weapons that did extra damage against a certain alignment, etc. Yet it wasn't a straight jacket for pcs, and for most characters, it could never...

What are you reading in 2025?

Well, I went to the library this morning, and all the books in the series (which they had two copies of) were checked out, so I guess I am going to have to wait. Got an Honorverse book and Five Broken Blades instead.

What are you reading in 2025?

Yeah, I have a couple of friends who raved and raved about it. It's not bad, but I don't feel any compulsion to read further. It's one of those series where I would if I had the next book around and I didn't have anything else to read. I'm planning on picking up the next couple at the library...

D&D General Disease related D&D supplements or adventures?

That title rings a bell but I am not sure. I don't know if I have read it. Maybe I just saw it on a cover and it stuck in my mind.

What are you reading in 2025?

Over the last week I read the first Dungeon Crawler Carl book, which I found disappointing after how much I'd seen and heard it hyped up, and Red Rising, by Pierce Brown, which I thought was fantastic. Both are the first books in series; I don't really feel too compelled to go on in the DCC...
