Sucking the Life Out of Skill Challenges

Very interesting view, Rune. How do you adjudicate failure/success? In my current example, the Party has to make 8 successful skill checks with a maximum on certain skills used (e.g. only three of those successes can be Perception checks). How do you translate that into the on the fly...

Sucking the Life Out of Skill Challenges

Quickleaf I am sure there is merit, but I do think it is partially my fault as well. For instance, the following are elements from the Ghoul Country Skill Challenge: Streetwise (DC 23; maximum of 3 successes): The character is at home in the urban jungle, able to navigate quickly through...

Sucking the Life Out of Skill Challenges

I am currently running Lord of the White Field, and the Party just made it into Hampstead last night. Since fighting 6000 ghouls is bad, they have to make their way through the city as stealthy as possible. I set the stage by explaining that they hear the ever present howl of ghouls, they...

Sucking the Life Out of Skill Challenges

My players do this. Every. Single. Time. I am getting to the point where I cringe when I see a Skill Challenge in an adventure. It may sound cool, but I know they will screw it up. Every Challenge ends up being a massive grinding exercise in frustration. Now, I do not announce "you are...

    Building A Dragon's Den

Seems like a lot of the solo monsters have a trait that allows them to roll a save at the beginning of their turn to throw off the affects of a stun/daze/restain/etc. Roll for it a couple of times, then if necessary, fudge the roll; dragon is free of daze.

    Necromancer...

I was in the exact same position as you. I had a player coming from 3.5E and he loves necromancers... I made a shade mage (from the Character Builder), and simply chose all spells that had the necromantic flair (i.e. they did necrotic damage, or had an undead element like Animate Dead). The...

D&D 4E The New Monster Math, Explained and Expanded

I have a couple of questions concerning the attached guideline document (love it, and thanks btw!): - do I add the Abilities bonus to each stat after I've assigned the array? - what is the NAD entry in the roles section?

Designating All Daily Attack Powers as [Reliable]

I have used the "luck/action/etc" points for years now ever since they were introduced in one of the optional rules books, and love the idea. My players have the option of using an Action point to maximize a die roll. The problem is, 99.99% of the time, that's what they do. They miss a roll...

Designating All Daily Attack Powers as [Reliable]

Locutus Zero: Good point. Maybe let players choose between the miss effect and reliable? That's my plan. If a power misses, I would ask the player: do you want to apply the Miss Effect or consider the power as Reliable, giving you additional chances to hit with it?

Designating All Daily Attack Powers as [Reliable]

Nothing is more frustrating to my players than getting caught up in a heated moment of a battle, using their minds and tactics, setting up that perfect shot/swing, and... ...rolling a dang 2 with a daily attack power. So, I am considering designating all daily attack powers with the [Reliable]...

    The "New Math"?

    Sweet, thanks!

    The "New Math"?

I keep seeing references to a new way of calculating monster health, and damage called 'New Math'. Apparently, it was introduced in the MM3? Can someone give me a breakdown of the formula, and/or reference where I can find such? I like the idea of this, especially if it will speed up...

Combining the Abilities of Two Different Magical Items

Has anyone had any experience with allowing a PC to combine the abilities of two different magical items? Pitfalls? Issues? I have a Swordmage who wants to combine a Cloak of the Walking Wounded and a Medallion of Death Deferred (the medallion would be the clasp of the cloak). My initial...

Behind the Times (are my core rules obsolete?)

On a related note: is the Adventure Tools - Monster List updated to this MM3 'New Math' standard?

Behind the Times (are my core rules obsolete?)

Haven't been on these boards in a long time, and going through a few threads today, I see a lot of things like: - updating monsters to MM3 standards - {this rule} revised by {this book} I have been DMing with just my original 4E books, happily churning along in ignorance. Are they obsolete...

    Enchant Item Ritual (over powered?)

I am unfamiliar with the bolded text above. There is no mention of this in the Compendium. What is the source? P.S. Thanks for all the insight gang.

    Enchant Item Ritual (over powered?)

The Enchant Item ritual says "touch a normal item and turn it into a magic item". So, the party wizard can essentially just look through the books, find an item he likes (that is his level or below), drop a few gold, and tah dah, he has all the magic items he wants. The only limitation is...

    Brakes Off - Multiclassing

Sorry, my intention for starting the Thread was to discuss the impact of the proposed rule change with a wider audience, not to cover any specific alterations. That's why I posted in the 4E Rules Forum, rather than House Rules.
