    D&D General Why is D&D 4E a "tactical" game?

About 4e vs PF2 movement: I’d lean towards arguing that 4e has more movement overall. There’s way more forced movement in 4e, and more triggered movement from immediate powers. Yes, PF2 doesn’t give everyone opportunity attacks, but the opportunity cost of moving is a bit higher in PF2. Many 4e...

    D&D General Why is D&D 4E a "tactical" game?

I’d say that it’s typically easier and faster to create an engaging fight in 4e than in 5e, mainly due to monster roles and more interesting monster abilities. However, I will also say that there’s kind of a reduced expectation of a tactically interesting fight in 5e. Like, looking at encounters...

    D&D General Why is D&D 4E a "tactical" game?

Marking in 4e isn’t a mental thing. It can be that, but it doesn’t have the charm keyword or anything like that. Like most conditions (and hit points) it’s context-specific, and in the fighter’s case marking is part of their physical attacks briefly interfering with the target’s ability to...

    D&D General Why is D&D 4E a "tactical" game?

Compared to all other editions I’ve played, and to other similar games like Pathfinder, I’d say the one main thing that makes 4e the tactical edition is the amount of off-turn movement. Many abilities will move enemies and allies on the battlefield, much more so than in the other editions or games.

D&D General New Summary and Release Date for 'Dragons of Deceit'

Do you really think that the existing Dragonlance fanbase is big enough to matter in comparison to the possible new fanbase that a modernized relaunch could create? Dragonlance is old and niche these days.

D&D General New Summary and Release Date for 'Dragons of Deceit'

You could do a modern take on Dragonlance with all the new races and classes. To me the draw of Dragonlance has always been the sense of discovery that’s at the forefront of the War of the Lance. It’s almost like a setting somewhere in between Dark Sun (full on post-apocalyptic) and Forgotten...

D&D General New Summary and Release Date for 'Dragons of Deceit'

The history of Dragonlance (soft) reboots is pretty wild if you think about it. The original stuff came out in the mid 80s, but then just a decade later the whole setting is basically uprooted and drastically altered by the Fifth Age stuff. That’s just around ten years of publication history...

    D&D 5E (2014) True Polymorph - Too powerful?

Just cap the number of fully functioning heads at triple the starting heads or something. Maybe after a point the new heads that grow are smaller and smaller and eventually just simple nubs that don’t contribute mechanically.

D&D 4E Monster stat block design using Excel (2021)

Ever since they had to discontinue the DDI services I’ve missed a 4e stat block template. Can you share the base template you’re using here? Is it easy to just fill in the names and numbers, without having to add in the general features like the action type headings or the ability score names?

Official News Spellcasting Monsters in Level Up

It's a good improvement on what we have right now. I also did something very similar for a 3.5 game I ran a while back, just to make the creatures faster and easier to reference during play. That said, the lich is a little ridiculous. It's true that an epic enemy like that can be complex, but...

Pathfinder 2E Opinions on APs available on Roll20

Roll20 is fine if you’re buying the APs on the platform. You’d probably want the Core Rulebook on Roll20 too however. You can also buy the PDFs and then import them on Foundry, but that’ll take you hours of learning Foundry and setting everything up, including the finishing touches on the AP...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2e: is it RAW or RAI to always take 10 minutes and heal between encounters?

For non-Group Impression group Make an Impression, you can have the player make separate checks for each creature. That way Group Impression retains value since you could have modifiers or fortune effects on a single roll, whereas with the separate checks you would often only add a bonus or a...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2e: is it RAW or RAI to always take 10 minutes and heal between encounters?

Hundreds of feats to homebrew a class? The magus has 40 class specific feats, plus a bunch that it shares with others. Homebrewing a caster is pretty simple all things considered since you don’t have to curate a spell list (which is the hurdle in 5e for example). That said, Group Impression and...

Pathfinder 2E Creating a Retreat System

This is a really nice and simple way to go about it, although like mentioned it could lead to odd player behavior with regards to Hero Points. Another really simple retreat rule could be to inflict a longer lasting condition. So, for example, if the party retreats, it works, but everyone is...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2e: is it RAW or RAI to always take 10 minutes and heal between encounters?

You can run four times your speed in 3.5 and PF1. You can run double plus 20 feet in 4e. Only 5e has double speed, or triple for rogues. Don’t know about pre-3e movement rules.

Pathfinder 2E Creating a Retreat System

I’ve been working on a Retreat VP system, which would work together with modified Stamina. In the modified Stamina rules the PCs would invert the Stamina and HP amounts, so half the class’ hp per level to Stamina and the other half plus Con mod to hit points. This turns a normal HP pool into...

Pathfinder 2E PF2: Second Attempt Post Mortem

Sure, in that scenario you’ve set the stakes low. But if you do want to set the stakes high for a level 16 rogue, should the default be level 16 or level 22? What if you want them very high? Should I have to use a level 19 or a level 25 DC?

Pathfinder 2E PF2: Second Attempt Post Mortem

The issue is that when a character can nearly guarantee an auto success with a check, you lose the stakes. It can be awesome to be so good at something that you kind of don’t need to roll, but it gets boring after a while.

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder 2e: is it RAW or RAI to always take 10 minutes and heal between encounters?

I’ve been using a skill challenge based retreat system in two of my 4e games for about three years now. At any point during a player’s turn the party can end combat and move to a retreat scene. It’s always the shortest challenge (4 successes) and its level is equal to the highest level enemy in...
