    D&D 5E (2014) Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

Astrology can very much be magical in nature in D&D. Dragon #340 has a treatment on supernatural/magical astrology for 3rd edition (3.5 specifically, I think).

    D&D 5E (2014) Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

But a setting like Forgotten Realms has tons of established lore and canon, not all of which a group may even know of. What if you override an established yet obscure piece of lore, without knowing it? Are you still running a canon game? What if the DM changes something before session 1, not...

    D&D 4E I love 5E, but lately I miss 4E's monsters

And you can ask the same question regarding all the various non-magical daily abilities of 3e base and prestige classes. But usually people don't. Makes you wonder.

    D&D 4E I love 5E, but lately I miss 4E's monsters

A 3e barbarian's non-magical rage ability has daily usage, and is limited to once per encounter too. A 3e rogue can use the non-magical defensive roll ability once a day. A swashbuckler can use the non-magical lucky ability once a day. The 3e prestige class cavalier has a special charge ability...

    D&D 4E I love 5E, but lately I miss 4E's monsters

There are more differences between an ancient blue and an ancient green in 4e. Blue: gore (push and prone), wingclap, breath weapon is a ranged single target attack, thunderclap, lightning burst Green: lashing tail aura, bite (ongoing poison damage), tail sweep, luring glare, mind poison And...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on playing Elf in Out of the Abyss [SPOILERS]

Maybe the fact that the elf character or characters aren't immediately killed becomes a (minor?) plot point that's initially a mystery to the party. As in, what extraordinary circumstances would warrant keeping a surface elf alive; what's going on here? Could build up some dread with it too.

    Is dominate evil?

If I burn, stab, and electrocute my enemies to death, that can be either evil, neutral, or good, depending on the situation? But if I take over their minds and force them to leave, causing no physical harm or pain to anyone on either side, that's always evil, or at best neutral? That's what...

Classic D&D tropes you've never mastered

Urban adventures. They never seem to work out like I want them to, something's always lacking.

In Defense of the Theory of Dissociated Mechanics

    I think you're confusing D&D Encounters with D&D Essentials. :)

    Aerenal vs Argonessen: why?

Doesn't the (3.5) campaign setting book hint that the dragons would destroy Aerenal if they could but the power of the Undying Court prevents it? That the deathless wield amazing power on the island because of the manifest zones but can't really extend it elsewhere except through the priests. I...

The Perils of Play By Post (Is it Just Me)?

My tips are: - Keep the gaming moving. Don't be afraid to skip boring events. If the players don't post for a while, move things forward with a post of your own. Strive to end your posts with something interesting and fun to react to. - You'll have players drop, it's ok. Just keep recruiting...

Does 4e have a sweet spot?

I've always leveled the monsters to match the PCs' level, to offset possible grind. It's worked really well, the players are able to hit the enemies often but the fights are still very much dynamic (going bloodied or unconscious frequently). I just spend the xp budget using equal-level enemies.

Let's Talk About WotC DM Supplements.

I remember back during the earlier part of the 3.5 era there was an outcry on the various forums about the lack of fluff in WotC's books. As a result, the later supplements (all, not just DM books) got more flavor text -- which of course didn't suit everyone, since we got less crunch. Kinda...

New Neverwinter Nights Game Probably On Its Way

From the Gamespot interview I understood that it's going to launch with heroic levels only. I wonder how slow the advancement's going to be. CRPGs these days tend to offer pretty rapid level ups or other rewards.

New Neverwinter Nights Game Probably On Its Way

Maybe they're going for a Diablo-style game where everyone just deals damage? Simple but fun (if not really D&D).

    3.5 better for world building?

Isn't this thread basically a list of who likes which edition? If you prefer 3.5, it's obviously better for worldbuilding. If you like 4e, that's better. Or am I missing something?

New Neverwinter Nights Game Probably On Its Way

Which is not a bad thing, IMO. Some of the best CRPGs have been like this -- Torment and Deus Ex.

    3.5 better for world building?

I think there's hardly any difference between the two when creating a world. Just minor details.

    Dark Sun art: Disappointed

The Creature Catalog art is really good! I didn't spot a single outright bad piece either.

Gen Con: Slavicsek says core books will continue to be published, other tidbits

All orcs, goblins, and kobolds in MM1 are heroic tier monsters, so they're not that outdated really. They're pretty much fine as they are.
