D&D General Am I crazy (BBEG idea)

Just because I think it's a fun idea doesn't mean you're not crazy. ;) The centaur also does not need to have lycanthropy - it could easily be some other kind of curse. The big questions I would have is does the centaur know he's cursed, does he know he turns into a nightmare? I think it...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

If you chose to use them, they were deadly. So we didn't use them - that was my only point. There were more options to insta-nerf, we avoided using them because they weren't fun. That sentiment - roll poorly and you're dead and there's nothing you can do about it - seems to be quite common so...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

Depended on the challenges the DM set up. You could always have that pit trap that insta-killed the unfortunate character that fell into it or you could just ignore death trap pits and monsters that immediately killed you because it wasn't fun. Which is what we did. It's not like there's ever...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

If you do decide to try 5e (and for what it's worth I'd just use the 2024 rules, there's not really that much of a difference in characters and monsters have been buffed) you can go from two extremes. First is that you just embrace gonzo adventure and go all in the characters being BDH (Big...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

People have always had house rules. We did max HP at first as well and, IIRC, when you rolled for leveling up you had to get half or more. We also started using a variation of point buy in 2e, before that we basically rolled until we got something we liked and assumed the ones where we rolled...

My experience was much the same. When in doubt the wizard just ...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

True ... but I would also mention that after a certain point if you could get the body back to town, you could likely get a raise dead done in return for some service in a lot of games. In some ways the more durable in the current version is also a bit of a myth or at least somewhat exaggerated...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

I agree, but my players are still okay with their characters dying. On the other hand I also talk about it before we start playing and we discuss how lethal we want the game to be and I we generally agree that character death should be rare but (hopefully) meaningful. On the other hand when...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

One of the reasons I like D&D is that we can make the game our own. Even back in the day when other people were using 10 ft poles to check for traps and doing everything they could to avoid combat or if it couldn't be avoided making sure you were prepared as possible? We never did that, we just...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

Other people have given some good feedback and I have some good news to add. You can try the game without spending a dime including, IIRC, Maps. The core rules are free and will give you a pretty decent idea of what it's like to play. So I'd advise you to set up a free account and check it...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

Just need to figure out how to convince the giant to cooperate ... .

D&D General Poll: How many Role Playing Games do you play besides D&D?

Two whole sessions a month? I'm lucky to get one.

D&D General Poll: How many Role Playing Games do you play besides D&D?

I thought I made that clear - in no way am I implying anything about how other people play or why. It's more a question of why you choose multiple systems. Even if you just jumped from one game to another because you like a variety of rules implementations, there's nothing wrong with having a...

D&D General Poll: How many Role Playing Games do you play besides D&D?

Assuming the ones I currently play on a regular basis, that's only D&D. I play or run with more than one group and quite simply I don't have the motivation, time, energy or players to play TTRPG of the week. I think those that answer 5 or more likely want very different things out of their...

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

If I were to use this, I would make that true for all the options. But I misread it - I thought it applied to all. That's what I get for reading it on my phone.

Aargh ... read that as applying to everything. So yeah ... not going to allow it.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

If you do a 1 level dip, you can still only contribute to a level 1 spell. It helps to read the actual text of the book and not rely on someone's interpretation.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

I just quoted the text. The contributing caster must "...expend a spell slot of a level greater than or equal to the spell’s level". You can't contribute to a fireball unless you have a 3rd level spell slot or higher to contribute.
