D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I've seen it. That's why this is mostly a DM problem of DMs not adjusting to tiers. Outside of the 1 caster, your enemies lack recovery or ramp. Hence the need for a quest to rush players forward.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

The stay spread of the 1E ranger don't translate to modern game design because the the 1E was practically impossible to ambush nor see coming but had terrible Dexterity and was beloved as a good moral leader despite having terrible Charisma. You'd have to do something like the fame wanderer...

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

They rewrote it with stuff already in D&D. That's the point. They literally A/B test PHB vs Tasha when they made the 24 ranger.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

They weren't allowed to. Too many of the 5e audience want 5e to be errataed but compatible with 2014 so their official and 3pp books and apps still work with it The first time WOTC suggested changed that aren't EXTREMELY easy to convert, at least 30% of the community kicked them in the mouth.

THe grandfather issues is 2024's backwards compatibility with 2014's elements.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

Because Rage is worth more than Sneak Attack but less than Smite. That's the issue. You can't make an Action, Rage, SA, FE, and Smite of equal strength. That's why they are siloed in classes.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

That's the point. In order to get a satisfactory version of Rage, sneak attack, and smite, you have to make them difficult to be used together. You can either have the water down version which can be freely combined or the archetypal versions that cannot and they are on their own tracks.

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

I've yet to see a company publish a system that works that way and is successful in getting sales. The typical drawback of classes systems or low class systems is that you struggle to make abilities and features of different archetypes equal in power or scope that they are all valid choices...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Again. It's not that the monsters are static. It's that the monsters are poor. 50% of most monster manuals are Monsters without resources to leverage a threat. The idea of dungeon crawl is very very vulnerable to guerrilla tactics because most monsters are broke.

No 1/2 caster, 1/3 caster, or nonwarrior rogue?

D&D 5E (2014) Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

No I meant my PHB class list would be Artificer Beastmaster Berserker (remained Barbarian) Brawler Chosen (Replacing Paladin and Hexblade) Cleric Fighter Marshal Ranger Rogue Shifter Sorcerer Warlock Weaponmaster Wizard The D&D druid is a cobbled together mess with no logical reason to look...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It's not 3 goblins left. It's 3 goblins who flee after the party novas half of them down. There aren't enough goblins left to challenge the party. Think of it this way: After a long rest, a mid level party has 100% of their resources. 100% of their resources is design to deal with 6 combat...

D&D 5E (2024) There is sauerkraut in my lederhosen: Snarf's Guide to Using (and adjudicating) Skills in 5e

To get Advantage, the book would have to be a large reference guide. Or you'd need several guides.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It's not a goblin clan of 3. It's the remaining 10 goblins after the party goes into the goblin cave, novas 20 of them down, then runs away to rest. The surviving goblins have 8 hours to gather resources to combat an adventuring party that already killed the plurality of the goblin warriors a...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The 5MWD is just a consequence of not converting D&D into a different paradigm at higher levels When D&D says the players become Heroes of the Realm, the enemies most be Villains of the Realm. DMs can just spit out random monsters. If players think enemies have no back up or resources, they...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The point is none of that of a threat to a party who has access "rest enabling" magic. And much of that takes more than 8 hours and runs on the premise that the goblins don't rest. Thats the crux of the issue. On rest and recovery it's Spellcasters, Armies/Factions/Guilds, Everyone Else

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I'm not talking about damage. I'm saying a caster monster sleeps and get 10 strong spells. They can shoot 5 of them at you on 1 encounter and have ~2 as passive buffs. A martial monster sleeps and gets no offense buff. They can't teleport in reinforcement and traps. They have to manually walk...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It's resources, not the spells. A D&D spellcaster is equivalent to a billionaire with a black market shopping app. They wake up every morning with a hand full of grenades, a hypno gun, a pair of mercs, a on call surgeon, and a bulletproof sports car. Every morning, 1,000,000 gp goes to your...
