    Two Dozen Nasty DM Tricks

There are several themes running throughout this thread. They appear to be: 1) Ensure that the trap exists in logical circumstances. The inhabitants (if any) must be able to avoid them in their day to day existence. The exception being hastily constructed traps, put in place because the...

    Most indispensible DMing tools.

Previously: MS Word, notepad and a dice roller. In future: the SRD, MS OneNote. Or in other words, a laptop.

    Piracy

My exact situation does not appear to have been mentioned. I used to pirate things (mainly software) in my childhood and teens. Then when I was studying for IT certification, around the time of napster being closed down, someone pointed out how big the fines for copyright infringement were. I...

Why don't monsters have power sources?

Outside of providing a theme to each class, what precisely does the power source do? Nothing so far as I can see. Which rather defeats the purpose of assigning them to monsters. Oh sure it COULD be integrated into the rules, but it hasn't been as far as I can see.

Forked Thread: Healing Surges: Let's see them in Action!

This is precisely where I disagree with you. The system either has healing surges or it doesn't - We agree that HP are an abstraction of physical health, luck, skill and other things involved in not dying. That remains true for all editions. It hasn't changed. It's a single mechanic to...

Forked Thread: Healing Surges: Let's see them in Action!

But that's the point isn't it? Neither is realistic, but at least with magic we can say "oh, it's magic to that's okay". Without magic, people just get better overnight... and that doesn't suit a lot of people because it makes NO SENSE. Magic allows us to bypass sense, but 4E says to bypass...

Forked Thread: Healing Surges: Let's see them in Action!

This is a very good point. Perhaps if healing surges were 1/day and they counted as temporary hit points, instead of healing... we'd have less arguments. Sadly the mechanics don't support this. You can do that in any edition, it makes no difference. You can say it takes 100 days to recover from...

    Vaporware

Janx has it right. Vaporware is a product that never got released. Once a product has been released it cannot be vaporware.

Forked Thread: Healing Surges: Let's see them in Action!

It's a TV show... it's all plot. If something happened without being part of the plot... wouldn't that be edited out? Except that healing surges last for 3, 4, 5 or even more fights, and you generally rest for other reasons after that anyway. Ergo, every fight you have healing surges. And to...

    Changeover Poll

I recently bought a laser printer for the sole purpose of printing out the Pathfinder pdf. I know how you feel. Unless I'm mistaken, DDI doesn't allow you to purchase individual issues. That is the killer for me. I don't subscribe to magazines, I pick issues that interest me. If I cannot do...

    Changeover Poll

Firstly, I apologize for returning to this so many posts later, but as the person who sparked the problem in the first place, I feel I must respond to make my intent more clear. Not knowing ANYTHING about Star Fleet Battles, I cannot see the relevance your comparison is intended to bring. I...

    OotS #623 Is Up....

The comic would lose all its funny. Leave 4E to another comic. Perhaps a different comic artist too.

    Changeover Poll

I'm probably not a good example of the average ENworlder, but I totally failed to see the relevance, or the humour in your tale. I thought this was a thread about D&D, and I keep finding all these random posts about Star Trek... I just don't get it. I nearly complained (in thread) last time...

    Changeover Poll

An alternative to the proposed 'why' poll, is: For those that left/do not play 4E: * Stuck with/went back to 3.x * Move to different system (including earlier editions) * Stopped gaming (or do not have a regular gaming group)

    D&dna

Didn't the various types of halfling come from interbreeding? I can't remember where I got that from... circa 2E though.

Our world through the eyes of a D&D inhabitant

Wait, it says here that once I learn something I can use it over and over, without having to memorize it every morning? How does that work? It doesn't make sense. Surely when I use my knowledge it disappears and I have to learn it again!

What formed your idea of what D&D is to you?

Initially, gold box games cemented my idea of what DnD was, and thus my pen and paper games were quite similar, but then, we were playing 2E at the time. Constant combat with hardly any story worked in 2E because you needed the EXP. Back when it WAS EXP instead of XP (at least in my group. I...

D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

Then we've been playing it wrong. I wish it was worded differently. e.g. "the first time ... each round while still marked." or something.

Sagiro's Story Hour: The FINAL Adventures of Abernathy's Company (FINISHED 7/3/14)

I've been following since about run 30, I just took a long hiatus because I thought Sagiro had stopped writing. What I mean by sucky place to finish, is that had I stopped one update earlier, there was no cliffhanger/character death. Just 'mundane' downtime events.
