    The weekly DM process

Thanks! I'm not sure if you'll be able to use my template--it's in Pages for the Mac--but you're welcome to it.

    The weekly DM process

Interesting thread. I use prewritten adventure paths. I used to do most of the prep for an adventure in advance, but now I prep week by week. My games are three hours weekly and I prep over the course of the preceding week. For me, prep-work is part of the fun of the hobby, so my checklist...

D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

I've used several companion characters with my (5 player) group. Mechanically, they work very well. What I've done, though, is give each companion character a "tactics" section at the bottom of its stat block that the players follow. Because of the size of the group, the tactics usually involve...

The return of Illumians -- sort of

Taking 10 was in the PHB. It's taking 20 that was removed from 4e.

D&D 4E 4E DMs: What setting are you currently using?

Running WotBS, which has its own setting.

    Magic Missile while blinded

I think y'all have been trolled, and brilliantly.

    Bookkeeping?

Almost none. In the 4e game I DM, characters are assumed to always have the contents of the standard adventurer's kit and to stock it when appropriate. We also don't track ammunition or encumbrance, and any mundane items like clothing (or cold weather gear) are handwaved. On the other hand, I...

    Instant Friends

I didn't really read it that way--more that they had finally figured out how to make the math for skill challenges work properly. More of a "we can have skill DCs that work for stand-alone checks and for skill challenges." But I don't remember reading anything that fundamentally changed the way...

How do you handle players who arrive late and players who leave early?

Yes. In my group, missing player's characters are assumed to be "off camera" but still present and taking part in combat, etc. If they arrive in the middle of the fight, they come "on camera"--and so do the monsters they were presumed to be fighting. I find 4e extremely easy to...

    Instant Friends

There is no Charm Person ritual in the DDI Compendium, nor anything like it or Instant Friends that I saw. There are some Bard rituals that provide bonuses to bluff or diplomacy checks, but that's it.

    Instant Friends

"Friends" Throughout the Ages Somebody mentioned interest in seeing the original versions of these spells. I happen to have copies of all the AD&D PHBs, so I looked it up: Level: 1 Range: 12" Duration: Special Area of Effect: One person Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 segment Saving...

WotBS Redesigning Burning Sky Skill Challenges

[/SIZE] sfedi, did you ever finish this challenge? I'm likely to run it next week and I'd love to see what you ended up with and also any actual play reports you might have. I'm also planning to run a modified version of your Mushrooms skill challenge--great work!

Switching places with a grabbed creature

I think it was a great ruling. I love for my players to improvise, so whenever they suggest something, I ask myself these questions: 1- Is it cool and heroic? 2- Is it specific to the situation? 3- Will the result be a bit more powerful than using a power? If yes, allow it! Also, I never take...

D&D 4E Looking for new 4e modules (casual)

Scales of War (in DDI Dungeon) has some excellent set-piece battles, and it's *very* easy to run. I ran it straight out of the book in most cases. Plot and role-playing is just sketched in. A good choice if you want a combat focus and you're into adventure paths.

First-time DM questions (new to D&D)

Look in the skills chapter. Every skill describes associated actions, and those actions have timings. Be sure to look at the errata too if you're not using the Rules Compendium. That's also in the skills chapter, near the beginning, under 'monster knowledge.' Again, if you don't have the RC...

First-time DM questions (new to D&D)

Both the DMG and the screen are in error. The DMG has the first printing numbers and the screen has the second printing numbers. Wizards recently made a third round of fixes to the DCs and I think they finally got it right. There's a publicly-available article in Dragon (I think) containing the...

D&D 4E Deciding Between PFTPG and D&D4e/E. Also, Four Simple Questions (D&D 4e repost)

Reading your requirements, it sounds like you'd be happier with Pathfinder. 4e player books don't read very well--they're mostly fairly dry lists of powers. The Essentials books are much more readable and interesting, but probably don't have the mechanical complexity you're looking for. On the...

    New Essentials Builds!

I agree, and I think Wizards is aware of it, too. Take a look at the recent discussion of "not just lots of choices, but clearly defined choices that make a real difference" and their move to grouping feats into clear sets of flavorful options. I strongly suspect the next character builder...

First-time DM questions (new to D&D)

I prefer tokens (flat squares or circles of cardboard) to minatures. They're much cheaper. The Fiery Dragon packs are good, and the forthcoming Monster Vault is supposed to have some nice ones.

Rules Missing from the Rules Compendium

No. That's a pretty significant omission, now that you mention it.
