So case in point. You decide that any DM that doesn't run an exciting game to your expectations to be "bad". Which is fine, it's a completely subjective measurement and that's your opinion which just happens to differ from mine. But this originally came up in the context of DM making the final...

So you want the rules to offer guidelines? Like the ones we already have where the DMG has a section on ensuring fun for all, having mutual respect and setting expectations? It's all good advice. Unfortunately no matter what we write in text, the problem is that bad GMs are going to treat it...

I may not care for the music from a death metal band so it's bad music for me, but they have their fans. In the meantime a truly bad musician, much like a truly bad DM, won't have an audience for long.

@Faolyn's example of the camera in the shower - it's not something I would ever allow (especially not without checking with the player who's character is being peeped on and there should be a discussion of red lines) - but perhaps the DM simply didn't think it was their job to police the actions...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I prefer the way alignment is handled now - it's a general guideline to use or not use as the player sees fit.

WizKids to Release New Red Dragon Plaque, With More Manageable Head Size

The only mount I wish I would have purchased came in two parts. One was the head of a stuffed cow, the other was the back end.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I've absolutely seen people who for some reason think it's fun to punish people for their alignment choice, especially paladins back when they had to be LG. A mod forcing characters to choose between two equally awful choices is not a moral dilemma, it's not "edgy", it's just going out of your...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I already gave my thoughts on alignment. I think it can be a useful tool for some people running the character (or monster for the DM). Meanwhile you've hijacked yet another thread with your personal pet peeve. It's okay to let a thread die if it's run it's course, sometimes it's just better...

If the fact that most people only play D&D for a year (whether that's true or not) in no way proves or indicates that there a significant number of DMs are bad then why even mention it?

And I'm saying that correlation does not mean causation. People have more time and opportunity to play before then get busy with careers and kids, there is no proof of causation of there being bad DMs and the reasons the majority of people playing at any one time are a certain 4 year age range...

For a long time the game didn't grow much but correlation doesn't mean causation. I can associate any number of things, it's meaningless. On the other hand the game grew by double digits every year for a decade with 5e (we don't have good numbers any more so we don't know). Maybe, just maybe...

    D&D 5E (2024) The 4 Classes I Would Not Play 1-20 In 5.5

Every once in a while I've seen a caster save the day or bypass some threat. But it's not nearly as often as some people seem to claim. Meanwhile I've also seen clever play, a good persuasion check or just a smart approach also bypass threats. A caster regularly pulling an "We win" card out...

Roy Sullivan, a park ranger in Virginia, claims to have been struck by lightning 7 times. Does that mean that being struck by lightning happens to 25% of the population? Of course not. He was just extremely unlucky. So yes, some people may have well have had a string of bad DMs. But in that...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

As I said, I wouldn't rate all but a couple of DMs I've gad over decades of play as truly bad. I find it hard to believe that when out of dozens (likely a hundred or more) DMs I've had over the years I would only rank literally 2 DMs as truly bad that my experience is some kind of an anomaly...

I agree but that also holds true for D&D in my opinion. It's not a bad thing to acknowledge that if you don't like a game there are others out there.

Guidance is handy but it just adds 1d4 to a check. Not sure what it replaces a rogues jack of all trades thing.

I had a chance to look at https://www.enworld.org/threads/in-your-experience-how-good-are-gms.293390/*. All I can say is that I get that some people are incredibly unlucky when it comes to DMs but I also find it hard to believe that A) D&D would be as popular as it is if most of the DMs were...
