D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

The target audience and consumers of D&D are not static. Some people keep playing, some stop playing, others pick it up. With 5e the number that they retained and gained grew for years on end which broke a pattern that had been established for multiple editions. There are many reasons for...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Control spells are primarily an issue if you think solo boss monsters are a good idea and have ever worked well in D&D. Yes legendary resistance is a patch but the game is full of them.

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

I don't really do random encounters, but I do try to run enemies as intelligent. Let's say the characters are invading a hobgoblin keep. If they notice a hut, what are they going to do? Shrug and go on with their day or gather everyone around to figure out what to do with the intruders...

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

It wasn't until 2016 according to a quick search.

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

I've only seen it used a few times, it was never particularly disruptive or game changing. Casting it in an area where it can be noticed is just giving the enemy time to prepare or implement countermeasures.

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

Obviously there was no DndBeyond in 2014, were there any digital sales at all back then? I doubt the exact numbers will ever be released unless someone that works for WOTC with insider information decides to share it.

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

So do you not see the contradiction in what you say about this? You claim you're just speaking for your own opinion and preference. Then you state "We all know..." we all know what? That you would like a new edition and that it includes things that I do not? About the only thing that's self...

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

I'm not the one who continues to quote data that has been thoroughly debunked in order to prop up a claim. I don't care if you think sales were falling or not but we have no way of knowing and even if they were we don't know why. I think it's likely that sales were not as good as they were...

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

Standard disclaimer: bookscan data doesn't mean much any more. Carry on.

D&D General Melissa shows how badly LTH misses the mark on wind protection

LTH wouldn't stop a hurricane with elementals in my game. Chance of buried in debris if the hut is on solid rock, ground washed away from underneath if not.

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

Then I don't know what your point is. I don't want your version of D&D. Short version is that I think it adds unnecessary complexity and could easily lead to way too many broken builds and turn off a lot of casual players. I didn't participate in your "what should 6e look like" because it...

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

Can I imagine purchasing a game designed specifically for me and my players? Sure. But it likely wouldn't meet your criteria of being "very different" because I like the current version. If I wanted to play a significantly different game there are plenty of options out there.

Someone who just said A game can't do everything so if you want something else, embrace that option. What you want from your hypothetical 6e wouldn't work for me and the current game works my players and seems to work quite well for a whole lot of others as well.

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

I would take a look at it, but that's pretty meaningless. I'm happy with 5e, it brought back what I loved about TSR versions of D&D and combined it with the rules fixes (i.e. no more THAC0) and organization of 3e. I think the 2024 update was necessary even if I don't care for all the changes...

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

I agree that it's odd that people want a different game and then seemingly can't play a different game because it's not labeled D&D. If I want to play (WOTC's) D&D, it's right there. If I want to play a game with similar style and themes that's more to my liking ... I would just play those. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Solasta 2 Announced!!!

Funny thing is, I don't want it to be BG 3.5. I want it to be it's own thing and if that means no romance just adventure? Huzzah! Make interesting characters but leave the drama for the threats they face? That's just as much D&D. They are still a very small development team working on a limited...

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

Isaac Newton once said "If I can see farther, it's because I stand on the shoulder of giants." Sometimes taking ideas from different sources and using them in slightly different ways or combinations is what innovation is all about. Most ideas are not like the Greek goddess Athena, born full...

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

You seem to be assuming that people care about the internal structure of the rules over the enjoyment they have from creating characters, going on adventures and having fun with other players. A lot of things that people enjoy have changed very little for decades, if not centuries. People...

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

A lot of products have been "innovative" in the past and nobody wanted them. If you want something different there are plenty of options, innovative is not always better.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

Hear a cry for help? We're going to rush in to help. But we also don't know exactly what's going on - someone could be crying for help because Timmy fell in the well again. If we both see each other at the same time we're going to roll for initiative, not have a time-out to prep. Going into a...
