Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun - First Impressions

You claim to know what WotC think without any evidence. Half giants have already been reconned to goliaths for a start, so I’m sure no one is losing sleep over that. But you still haven’t answered the question, asked several times: why would WotC use names like preserver, defiler and templer if...

Trailer Frankenstein | Guillermo del Toro | Official Trailer

I watched this last night on Netflix, so here are my thoughts. Spoilers of course, for people who have no idea what happens:

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

Contrary to popular myth, the reason for that was technical - psionics. As soon as they switched how they evaluated popularity so that the proposed psionics system wasn’t rejected out of hand they shadow-announce Dark Sun.

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

The fans of a setting scream every time a new version is released. But they are a small number of loud voices. I think people have strong feelings about the possibility of Dark Sun. But I don’t think it’s more popular than other classic settings. Certainly not Greyhawk or the Realms. So long as...

New Unearthed Arcana Brings Back Five Subclasses

It’s not confusion - warrior of intoxication is a terrible name. Even worse than warrior of drunkenness, which would be the unchanged version. Indeed warrior of… sounds bad with a great many things.

D&D 5E (2024) Just Because a location is not on the Atlas of Faerun doesn't mean its gone.

It sounds cooler than it was, we just made street plans for estate agents (realtors). But we did use the same printing method that they used for maps in 1980s adventure modules.

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

Old grogs are not the only sides in this game. Dark Sun has lots of interesting elements that could appeal to newer players who don’t care about the original, including the massively exaggerated whiff of controversy.

D&D 5E (2024) Just Because a location is not on the Atlas of Faerun doesn't mean its gone.

I used to be a cartographer. We often left things off our street plans for reasons like "we can't fit that on the page" and "we have to not infringe on Ordinance Surveys' IP". Didn't make those places disappear.

Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun - First Impressions

Probably happened in Africa several thousand years earlier. Sacrifice, human and otherwise, is a common ritual, and you want to do that as close to the gods as possible. And the easiest way to get close to the gods is to build a step pyramid.

    D&D 5E (2024) One Store's Sales (D&D 2014 & 2024)

The big takeaway from that is that adventures sold a lot better than settings. If that's reflected in WotC's data, it would suggest that the current setting/adventure ratio is too high.

Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun - First Impressions

Are you thinking about the art? Because that doesn't matter since there will obviously be new art. Aztecs are the only one of these that might cause issues. We had a reprint of Hidden Shrine as recently as Yawning Portal. But thanks to ToA WotC will be a bit Leary of references. But the...

D&D General How would you do a fantasy mall?

A slightly adjacent topic, but I recently reread REH's Red Nails, and I was stuck by how his lost city resembled an abandoned shopping mall. A large low rectangular building, lots of glass in the roof for light, a closed environment, wide east-west and north-south boulevards surrounded by...

Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun - First Impressions

Changing or deleting these seems to me like the biggest change that the setting requires. Don’t recall much real world culture in the original boxed set. Aside from Rome, which doesn’t count. I don’t think metaplot stuff matters to the setting. Obviously, there will always be some people who...

Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun - First Impressions

So, what do you think they are for? Because if they wanted to do a Blood Mage they would have called it a Blood Mage. There is no reason to use Dark Sun specific terminology unless you are doing Dark Sun (and are quite happy for people to know that).

The Mummy 4 Is Actually Happening?

I saw it on BBC I think. Does that count? I haven’t seen it since though. It seems to have gone to the same place as Pirates of Darkwater. Don’t remember, too long ago. I think there was an explanation though.

Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun - First Impressions

No, I tried using them, they were terrible. Space combat in Traveller isn’t really fun - too simulationist.

D&D General What Are Dragonlance's Weis & Hickman, and Actor Manganiello Cooking Up?

The weird capitalisation is a strong indicator. I doubt we will hear more from that username. Who are these HEROES that we are being warned not to antagonise? Coded message is coded.

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

It’s not only kids who like fluffy bunnies. I would say that kids over 6 are very unlikely to like fluffy bunnies.
