I prefer plots that don't involve the end of the world. I mean, yes, I did plenty of them back in the day, but I tired them many, many moons ago. I'm like @Clint_L in that I prefer plots to come out of the charatcer's back story, flaws, and interests.

Rivers of London is a big series, 9 novels, 3-4 novellas, half a dozen graphic novels. Lots of fun. I've just started a re-read of the series.
