D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

Yeah that sounds roughly like a 5.4e that could work. I personally wouldn’t let 6th level spells ever be encounter spells, but that’s a small adjustment. I’d also adjust all classes that aren’t full casters to have the reduced slot progression but not spell level progression pace. So half...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

Exactly. For every vet I know who became a marine or soldier because their life had no purpose, I know 3 who joined up while living in a comfortable home with loving parents and opportunities to go to college or get a decent job.

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

Ah beans…. Okay I am resisting the powerful urge to argue about 4e powers. But I do think that if you take specific 4e powers and present them like 5e Battlemaster manuevers or spells, depending on the specific power, you are already a lot to the way to fixing the feel of them. For some...

D&D General Rogue Subclass: Mastermind (Revised)

I’d say the most important thing the mastermind does is make the team more effective. Rather than giving themself inspiration, let them get information about a creature, and use the help action, as bonus actions. Also at 3, let them drop a die of sneak attack and add it to the next attack roll...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

Fair enough, everyone has stuff like this where they just can’t resonate with a particular thing. I think that you’re assuming a type of violence that isn’t universally the case in “serious” games, though. In particular the phrase “ready to kill anyone who stands in their way” rings quite...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

I think the spell diversity isn’t quite that great. No greater than the Bard, and probably less. And like the bard, just don’t give it a lot of direct big damage spells. Focus on buff and debuff and weird utility and curses and whatever else.

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

The Witcher can nearly be done with the Bloodhunter, but I’d rather see a less edgy take on it (which would probably be an arcane halfcaster) Assassin’s Creed characters are more doable with the new Monk (deflect attacks is a vital change here), and kinda the new rogue, and the more shadow...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

The way to do it is a combination of a feature to add the effect of a cantrip to an attack with a weapon, and spells that are only work taking to use with weapon attacks. Half caster spells aren’t weak, they’re only weak in the hands of someone not focused on weapon use. People compare them to...

    Trailer MERCY Trailer (2025)

The imagined patterns on a stippled ceiling are more interesting than Tron Ares.

D&D 5E (2024) Feywild technically doesn't mention the Seelie and Unseelie Court

I mean it’s mostly a Scottish categorization, the term Seelie is more loosely defined outside that context. And personally, I’d rather have summer and winter, light and dark, or some weird arrangement that doesn’t seem like it makes sense at first glance. I did a game where faerie was...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

Absolutely! And there is a lot to recommend being those things. And then there is the “carrying on the family legacy” backstory, or “I was raised in the guild” backstory, or even “I was a weird silent child and the local [insert class] was known to be similar so my parents took me to her and...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

Why wouldn’t they? One day, they helped the knight with something, showed potential, the knight saw something in them, so they offered to squire the young farmer. Who would say no? Yeah I mean, I actually really like both tragic and happy characters, myself. But I see no issue with a...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

I’ve seen this a lot, but I always figure it’s super easy to have such a character. Safe and comfortable doesn’t mean fulfilled. The character left home to find a greater purpose to their life. A calling. Call to adventure. Someone brings the character on the adventure, not unwillingly but...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

“Soup Dad” Hank the Goliath Watchman of Waterdeep, just wants to help. When he goes on adventures it’s because someone he cares about needs backup or because Waterdeep is in danger, etc. Finnan O’Foalan eventually became “The Shadow of Death” after spending a century lock in shadow stasis by...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

The biggest hurdle to most “15th class” ideas is that they all have some way to cobble them into existence in current rules. So, the question is, which has the least existing representation? Probably the warlord, even though I’d rather see a base class gish or assassin.

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

Assassin key feature options: Shadow Strike: once per round, When you are hidden or the target is incapacitated, or the target has not acted yet in this combat, your successful attack deals d10 instead of d6 sneak attack damage (if using this as an alt subclass feature. If using it for a base...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

Of course you can. There are many unofficial ones that do the fantasy very well. The current assassin is only weak because it doesn’t make you better as sneaking up on someone early on and has nothing going for it after round 1 until late levels. There are fixable problems. Shadow assassin...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

No leadership qualities is flat out not a knight. Full stop. Everything else works just as well for a warlord. It’s just a renamed warlord with specific gear focus. Which sounds fine. Eh. The obsession with making everything that has any nonmagical iterations be strictly nonmagical annoys me...

    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

Anyway I voted warlord (different name. Always.) because it’s the least currently fudge-able in the current rules. Shephard Druid, Spirit Bard, and just a Druid with the right spells in general can do Shaman, and there is a lot of gish in 5e at this point. I want a proper gish class and I wish...
