This doesn't seem to be that different than the Pirate variant of sailor.

Can I suggest don't play to Min/Max, play to have fun interacting with the story instead.

Tying off to the ship is great thing to do. My rogue was the only character to not fall off a ship in a storm Because I was smart enough to tie myself to the ship, (And my dex saves helped).

In the campaign I am currently playing in, my rogue found a Shortsword of Accuracy, which in game terms means it is a magical +1 to hit, but does not have a +1 on the damage.

I hated in 3.X, every couple of levels I had to ditch my weapon and get a new more powerful one. I like that I could conceivably have the same weapons for the my PC entire life.

How about a feat that the player can take at later levels? Didn't Drizzt over come his sunlight sensitivity?

Is there vehicle combat rules in the DMG, such as ship to ship naval combat?
