Dhampir and Other Species To Be Included in Astarion's Book of Hungers

Maybe? I can certainly hope, but I won’t hold my breath. That’s an assumption. The fact is we don’t know what they’re going to contain. But, regardless, I can’t imagine that digital-only was the only financially viable option for publication. This is WotC we’re talking about, not some small...

Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun - First Impressions

I mean, I loved 4e Epic Destinies, and if Level Up’s are at all like them, I’m sure they’re cool too. But despite sharing a name, I don’t think what this book is describing is intended to be like what 4e called Epic Destinies at all. They’re not supposed to be bonus powers, they’re explicitly...

Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun - First Impressions

I’m of the opinion that “OC style play” isn’t a useful label, it’s an external term used to demean a constellation of player behaviors that a lot of DMs consider negative but that there is no single cohesive play-style that all such behaviors are typical of. That said, yeah, this section seems...

Dhampir and Other Species To Be Included in Astarion's Book of Hungers

I for one am appalled by it, but I seem to be in the minority, at least around here. A lot of people seem to think digital-only is somehow the only financially viable way the material in these books could ever reasonably be published. Which seems like an insane thing to believe IMO, but that was...

Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun - First Impressions

I kind of hate the section on epic destinies, and I feel like it’s weird that I haven’t seen anyone else mention it yet? It seems to basically be advising DMs to script entire character arcs out with the player(s), planning specific story beats to go along with the Feats they plan to take and...

Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun - First Impressions

Not really. They’re very small, simple adventures, I think they’d work best quest board style. They do look very easy to use, but they also look pretty one-note. Very simple, linear strings of encounters, with very little room for players to make meaningful decisions. They’d work perfectly fine...

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

These are definitely powerful applications of Circle Casting, but honestly I feel a degree of “don’t threaten me with a good time” about it… maybe I’m underestimating just how powerful this would be, but… I dunno, I don’t think it’s unmanageable. Maybe I’m wrong though, I’ll have to play with it...

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

Number of characters concentrating is still equal to number of spells being concentrated on, yes. However, the characters doing the concentrating don’t need to be able to actually cast the spell they’re concentrating on, they just need to have the spellcasting or pact magic feature. This means...

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

I agree, that’s why my initial suggestion was making an exception for action/bonus action spells. But for longer cast times, multiplying the time required by the number of casters could help make circle casting feel like a bigger undertaking.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

What if the time required to cast a circle spell was multiplied by the number of casters? So, a 1-hour cast spell cast by 8 people takes 8 hours. Maybe make an exception for 1 action (or bonus action) spells so they’re still practical to circle cast in combat. Or maybe don’t, if you’re worried...

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

Now that I have the book and have read the section, here’s my take. Can this system be exploited to do some pretty broken stuff? Absolutely. Is it going to be a problem at some tables? Most likely. Is it going to be a problem at most tables? Probably not. Is it going to be a problem at my...

    D&D 5E (2024) Tuning big single creatures into multi-part-creatures.

I can see that being the case for some. These are pretty simple stat blocks though, so personally, I wouldn’t mind.

    D&D 5E (2024) Tuning big single creatures into multi-part-creatures.

Personally, I don’t mind running large numbers of creatures in combat, especially when several of them are identical, like the four “leg” creatures. But YMMV.

    D&D 5E (2024) Tuning big single creatures into multi-part-creatures.

I was tempted to vote “other” and say it’s not a good idea, it’s a great idea. But the joke wouldn’t be worth messing with the poll results in that way. Yeah, this is awesome. It reminds me of how dragons work in Dragon Age Inquisition, which has some of the best dragon fights in any video...

D&D General How often do you use or encounter Dungeons and/or Dragons in your games?

Dungeons are quite literally the name of the game at my table. Generally speaking, dungeons are where adventures happen, the wilderness is an obstacle between the adventurers and the dungeon, and town is where you go to sell off the spoils of a successful adventure and take a respite before the...

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

Well, that’s dumb. Though, frankly, I think Clerics should be Charisma-based too, so whatever.

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

Why does that key off Wisdom instead of Charisma…?

New Unearthed Arcana Brings Back Five Subclasses

That’s a bit better. Fist is a little odd to combine with staggering. Maybe Warrior of the Staggering Step or Staggering Gait, something like that.

New Unearthed Arcana Brings Back Five Subclasses

Staggering Warrior would be fine I think, but “Warrior of” seems to be a tough naming convention to work with.

Warrior of Staggering? It’s better than intoxication but I’m not sold
