D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

I do. Obviously it’s impossible to know for sure unless the designers say, but I think my reading is the most straightforward interpretation, and there are several pretty easy ways to change the wording that would have made it not so.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

I am not one of those DMs because I never played during a time when those spells worked that way. But, in those DMs’ defense, that was such a memorable moment in so many games that we still talk about it today. And the point of the game, both in my opinion and in the text of the How to Play...

Other than, you know, the text of the ready action, which specifically says you cast the spell when you use it.

Right, as per the text of the Ready Action, which are more specific than the general rules for casting spells.

It doesn’t change the casting time. You cast it as an Action. The Ready Action.

Which the Ready action allows you to take in response to a trigger instead of on your turn.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

You don’t. The Ready Action specifically says you cast the spell as normal on your turn and release it later, and casting a spell as normal definitely includes spending the spell slot, so if you’ve already cast one spell on your turn, you definitely can’t Ready another with action surge. Unless...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

“Cast normally” is not defined anywhere, but in context is very clearly talking about the normal rules for casting the spell. On the other hand, actions are very clearly defined, and “Ready” is not “Magic.”

D&D General The rapier in D&D

Rapiers are generally cut-and-thrust, but they’re very thrust-centric, so them not being able to do slashing damage is probably more justified than longswords not being able to do piercing damage. I mean, historically people didn’t really categorize swords all that much. Mostly they called them...

D&D General Hit Points are a great mechanic

Amusingly, under this interpretation potions of healing and potions of vitality are named backwards. But, yeah, I also prefer this interpretation.

Don’t even need a ruling. It absolutely just works as written, and I believe as intended. Yall are just cagey about any interpretation in which phrasing is important, but this is WotC we’re talking about. Even when they try to write in “natural language” they can’t help but make it function...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases Updated Unearthed Arcana for Arcane Subclasses

I mean, I don’t think they want to “kill” their own product. I imagine the goal will be not to fully reproduce the content of either of those books, so there’s reason to want all three.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Arcane Subclasses Update

Now this is a necromancer! The ability that lets you make your undead explode when they die is my favorite. I especially like how it synergizes with the raspier ability to kill one of your undead to regain hit points. Too bad that one only works when you become bloodied, but I guess being able...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

No such thing is stated, it’s stated that you can’t use the Magic Action, which the Ready Action is not. I genuinely believe it is both clearly worded and intended. In this case and the stealth case. If you don’t agree, that’s fine, but it’s pretty insulting to act like the interpretation I...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Cast a Spell isn’t an Action defined by the 2024 rules

Making a point by trying to argue for an interpretation you don’t actually agree with, for the purpose of rhetoric. That’s what a bad faith argument is.
