Miniatures and Madness - Legends and Lore by Mike Mearls

Fair enough, which is why I said 'if they could make it work.' Call my opinion an overreaction against the tendency towards the trends Mearls identified in the article, along with the increasing production and marketing of material for/to players as opposed to DMs, and a perceived shift of...

Miniatures and Madness - Legends and Lore by Mike Mearls

I predicted this (half-jokingly) for 4E. If they can figure out a way to make it work, I honestly wouldn't be surprised. (Disclaimer: I have no stake in the edition wars, having given up on both 3.5 and 4E, and now leaning towards Savage Worlds, True20, or the old SAGA rules. All I want...

Which edition change changed the game the most?

2 years. AD&D 2nd Edition launched in 1989. (Closer to 1.75, actually--if memory serves, the 2nd Edition PH came out in May 1989, and MC8 was a February or March 1991 release.) A basic outline of the planar structure was included in the 2E DMG, and if you wanted more details, you could go...

Which edition change changed the game the most?

It didn't fade completely, though. I was reading through the Al-Qadim Arabian Adventures handbook a couple of days ago, and several references in the kit descriptions appear to assume that the rule's still in play.

Legends & Lore - Mike Mearls' new column

Really? I can't shake the feeling he doesn't much care for 2nd Edition. :)

Have you been published in Dragon?

"Forum", DRAGON #193 (May 1993), decrying powergaming and munchkinism. I was young and working through some personal issues. :) "Saga of the Mists", DRAGON #240 (October 1997) Using the SAGA Rules System for Ravenloft. "Arcane Lore: Tomes of Forbidden Lore", DRAGON #252 (October 1998) To...

Mearls' Legends and Lore (or, "All Roads Lead to Rome, Redux")

Bad example, since Nintendo is selling games going back to the NES through its Virtual Console. It's even allowing developers to sell new games designed with 8-bit style and standards through it. I would also note that Hasbro has had no problems with reissuing old Transformers and GI Joe...

No Ravenloft anytime soon (if ever?) No problem!

Stick with the 3.0 version--the 3.5 version is much more expensive on the secondary market, isn't really 3.5, and cuts out some material that might be useful (some of the monster stuff appears to have gone missing) while adding in some very poorly constructed and conceived material. Even if...

Discussion on the feasability of WotC supporting all editions in DDI

Not strictly accurate. The 1E-2E changeover was a far less drastic one than any of the WotC edition changeovers, not only in content, but in support. Many 1E products were kept available up until 1993 or later, judging from the backlist in TSR's own catalogs. DRAGON Magazine articles designed...

Wizard just announced [Your Dream Release]

The problem is, Wizards just announced that my dream release . . . has been shelved. :( (I've wanted a standalone Ravenloft game for years. I don't know if I'd use 4E as a base, or would have liked the 'playing monsters' element they were talking up, but if it's been shelved, I doubt...

    Modrons!

I can't read the article . . . but that seems appropriate for beings created by Primus. :)

Dear Wizards, I no longer have a clue what you're doing

Well, it's true that WotC did push D&D in a much more mini-centered direction once they took over (this, along with the instability of the rules, is one of my two major reasons for not really buying into 4E--and I'd generally abandoned 3E long before), but the collectible miniatures aspect...

    Best Dragon Magazine Issue Evar

Issue #126, October 1987, one of their first Halloween 'theme' issues. Lots of cool articles in that one. My favorite? #162, October 1990: More Halloween goodness, including Nigel Findley's seminal article on "The Mind of the Vampire" (and the ghost, and the lich . . . ) and RAVENLOFT DMing...

    New D&D In-Store Play Program

On the other hand, there have been rumors of an Advanced Player's Handbook and Advanced Dungeon Master's Guide in the works over the past few months.

Fortune Cards, we just received a preview

It's looking like you might have been partially right. New Wizards Play Network D&D starting up in September. It's not competitive in the sense of 'players against each other', but it does appear to be more of a 'challenge' event or quasi-tournament style, and they do encourage Fortune Cards.

What do you think of the Deluxe DM Screen?

I'll see your parody and raise you pedantry: "A few reds even make their homes among snow-capped peaks, because altitude matters to them more than temperature."--Draconomicon: Chromatic Dragons, 41 :D

    AD&D or 5e

And yet Pathfinder appears to be a solid #2 in the market. :)

    AD&D or 5e

Nothing more than the titles, I'm afraid. Advanced Player's Handbook mentioned. Advanced Dungeon Master's Guide mentioned. But as I mentioned above, I expect we'll hear more--even if it's just 'they were scrapped'--at D&DXP next week.

    AD&D or 5e

Leaks over the last six months suggest that an "Advanced Player's Handbook" and "Advanced Dungeon Master's Guide" are on the agenda. I expect we'll hear something about this next week.

    D&D has been cancelled (speculation).

I should have been clearer. The figures were published in the January 2006 and January 2007 issues. Thus, they cover the span from late 2004/early 2005 (depending on the lead time) to sometime near the end of 2006--long before 4E was announced. EDIT: Although the figures given are either...
