OSR OSR game with more dangerous magic

I'm leaning towards DCC. I'm wondering how good the Dying Earth and Lankhmar box sets are? I like my settings for 60-70's swords and sorcery than most of what I've seen in modern settings.

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

I suppose. But again, that is one element of the Hasbro machine I find distasteful, and they only stopped due to public outcry. I don't view them as a company I would like to support even if they put out a game I found entertaining, which they don't. Which is ultimately why I threw away...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

Between the OGL disaster, which sucks since I'm an OGL/OSR referee, and 5e itself I think we have the perfect storm that makes me mostly uninterested in what the official D&D game is doing these days. Which in one sense is kind of a bummer but its been that way since 4e so I'm used to it. And...

OSR OSR game with more dangerous magic

That is one option but I'm lazy. If I could find a simple way to bolt WHFRP 2e magic system on OSE I'd do it I think. I could come up with a casting number for every spell and just convert it, but I'm looking for various options. Of which I've gotten a few in this thread so thanks everyone.

OSR OSR game with more dangerous magic

Its interesting. I think what I really want is more powerful spells have a greater chance to go nuts.

OSR OSR game with more dangerous magic

I do have LOTFP and its got some things I adapted to my OSE game. But I'm really looking for the spell casting mechanic that requires a roll.

OSR OSR game with more dangerous magic

WHFR v2 is good for me in that you have to roll and can't just assume that a spell will work every time with no repercussions beyond what is in the spell description, of which in D&D have become less and less of an issue. You don't age a year with a haste spell anymore for example. And if you...

OSR OSR game with more dangerous magic

Thanks for all the replies. I do have DCC and along with WFRP 2e is a prime candidate. I like how in WFRP 2 the more power you try to channel, by rolling more dice, the more chance you blow something up. Was interested in other options so thanks for pointing some out.

OSR OSR game with more dangerous magic

Hello. I'm looking for an OSR style game that has magic that can go wrong. I'm tired of the always predictable magic systems of D&D since the beginning. I have ran and enjoy S&W and OSE but I'm looking for a magic system that can go haywire if you push it too hard, ala Warhammer FRP 2e...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why aren't you using 5e 2024?

Ran a couple 5e campaigns back when and it just isn't a rules version I like. It always felt like D&D on easy mode and is just bland with little character IMO. Nothing I have seen out of the new version makes it any closer to a system I'd like to run or play. But I'm more of an OSR fan so...

D&D 5E (2024) Did you make up your mind about 5.24?

It doesn't fix anything in 5e for me so its still an edition I have no interest in playing or running.

    D&D 5E (2024) You're not planning on getting 2024 D&D? Why is that?

I don't care to play 5e anymore and nothing I've seen from 5.5 seems like its going to make it more like my tastes. I'm fine with OSR games. OSE, S&W, etc.

D&D General Is WotC's 5E D&D easy? Trust me this isn't what you think... maybe

That is entirely true. Which is why I just lost interest in running or playing 5e. No right or wrong just personal preference.

D&D General Is WotC's 5E D&D easy? Trust me this isn't what you think... maybe

To me 5e is easy mode D&D once you hit 5th level, and even before that. To some that is fine, but I still prefer campaigns were PC death is not uncommon. The last campaign I ran was the Underdark campaign. When I was seeing a group of 10-12th level PC curb stomping demon princes it became...

    Warner Bros. Now Deleting Games

Stuff like this is just part of us accepting the conveniences of platforms like Steam compared to owning a disc we can install the game from. Though even when I was buying games on DVD I would find that it was nothing more than a placeholder while it connected that game to Steam or Origin, etc...

    Rules-Lite VS "Crunchy" TTRPG Systems

Yeah, the core system of D20 wasn't very complex. It was the number of modifiers that were changing round by round. And depending on the group that could be a real PITA as people would lose track of what was what and how feat X applied to situation Y.

More pig-faced orc miniatures on the market

I remember watching Jedi at the drive in and saying "they have orcs in space!" Little did I know that would become a common thing.

More pig-faced orc miniatures on the market

I like my orcs with a lot of oink. I need to find some STL files to print stuff to go along with my Otherworld minis and I'll check out those other links. Thanks!

    Rules-Lite VS "Crunchy" TTRPG Systems

I just lack the time or interest in rules dense systems unless. Something like Old School Essentials with the advanced books is advanced enough for me. So a simple system that has a lot of options is good. I'm playing to hang out with friends and do some adventure gaming, I'm not interested...
