What's Your Favorite System for Star Wars

I like the GURPS stuff I've seen for the Star Wars universe but I think the WEG RPG versions are the best. Unless you want to break out Space Opera. How's that for barely playable.

D&D 5E (2014) Why does Wizards of the Coast hate Wizards?

It would be interesting to have a few more bonus action options for wizards, but I don't think they need it since they have action to bonus action spells. Also as mentioned Wizards are already quite good and the UA class modifications were to shore up some of the weaker parts.

Help Me Understand the GURPS Design Perspective

Interesting, I didn't see much discussion about why I like GURPS better that most other RPGs. GURPS allows me to world build the way I like to world build. I can add the different books to find the things I want to put into my game that serves a narrative or game purpose. Do I want a fantasy...

I'll put in another plug for GURPS Dungeon Fantasy.

    What's a word for a non-adventurer?

I would go with Denizens or if you want to be more medieval, Members of the Four Estates (Nobles, Priests, Warriors, Laborers) Subjects would also be good

[Skywalker discussion] What would "break" Star Wars for you?

The loss of Mara Jade is what killed Star Wars for me. I wasn't fully attached to most of the EU material but what the new series gave us is a shallow replacement for some of the better material. The most recent series just don't make any sense for me. The story doesn't follow rationality or...

D&D General D&D game world economy, wages and modelling the ancent world

Whenever I see these economics threads, I have to ask, Did you read this yet? https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/192370/A-Magical-Medieval-Society-Western-Europe-Third-Edition Was designed for 3rd edition but holds up well enough.

Starting watching Another Life on Netflix - wow, can they hit any more cliches? SPOILERS

The Expanse books are better than the show. Probably the Altered Carbon books are better too. But Edgar Allen Poe was the best thing about the Altered Carbon show.

Starting watching Another Life on Netflix - wow, can they hit any more cliches? SPOILERS

Yeah, my wife made me stop watching after the first episode (at least I cannot watch it around her) because the writing is just so terrible. Bad science where you have a ship capable of 96 LYs in 3 months but somehow needs gravity assist? (Don't even get me started on the dark matter cloud.)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is This Odd?

I prefer that players do not access monster stats of the creatures they are fighting. 1. It just breaks the tension of what the enemy they are facing is capable of unless they've fought one before. 2. I probably gave the enemy some extra powers or something and I'm not interesting in players...

Designing holistic versus gamist magic systems?

If you want a magic system that has the kinds of things that might be historically relevant you should find a copy of Bruce Galloway's Fantasy Wargaming. There were not spells per se but instead of you defined what you wanted to do, then the GM looked all all the related modifiers (materials...

Why do you play games other than D&D?

I cannot tell if you are intentionally trying to misunderstand what flaw aramis erak was pointing out or not but having experience with many SF Bay Area conventions, the number of games being run in systems other than D&D are a reflection of the game events being run by the staff of an RPG team...

    qualitative comparison of RPG systems

If you want a breakdown of RPGs by mechanics and genre I would recommend you start with the BoardGameGeek database on RPGs. You probably can get a list of RPGs by mechanic and genre which might be more effective than a forum thread.

Why do you play games other than D&D?

I play games other than D&D because I'm not always interested in the leveling treadmill. D&D is designed with the leveling treadmill of getting to more interesting content the more you level. I like games where the challenges are less about scaling the enemies but solving the mystery or...

How Many Actual Sessions Do Your Campaigns Last?

I like to build my games with some story arc and then the game ends when the arc is complete (or whatever the players ending up doing to resolve or ignore the situation). Games can run from 25-40 sessions for me. This way it's easier to switch to a new GM who now can do his story arc. You...

"I'd Never Normally Play This, But . . . ." -- i.e., That One Time You Got Talked Into Going Way Outside Your Comfort Zone

I've been on the forums and was on the Pyramid private usenet group before that and I've never heard of Steve Jackson saying HERO system was the main inspiration. I can check my copy of Man to Man which was the first GURPS and it was very much like The Fantasy Trip. And I've never seen any...

3 Favorite Things About Your Favorite System

I'll do GURPS. 1. Character Vision from the start. Almost any character can be modeled and it allows people to create their vision from he start and make tweaks and improvements as you play. I like the balance between skills, talents, powers, and stats. You can have a powerful old wizard and...

How do you get to GURPS?

I think that when you have high level skills the goal is to be using feint and other maneuvers to make things more interesting. Cosmic level super powers are harder to run in GURPS but a duel between two skilled fighters should be like Princess Bride where Wesley and Montoya are playing around...
