    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Class variant: Smite Evil. - Cross out Action Surge on your character sheet. Instead write "Smite Evil". There. Done. If you want to play a Paladin, you play a Fighter; take the Acolyte Background, Take Magic Initiate Cleric. We can get rid of the Paladin class now there is no need for it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Oh for gods sake! Just admit you dislike the idea on principle. It's D&D, fun and game balance trumps realism by a factor of 100 to 1. What about Bards - when they go to bardic college to they have special warrior training sessions? (In case they need to deal with jealous partners maybe?)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Eh. Clerics are full casters and get 1d8 hit-points and armour, Long gone are the days when this was because they traded off spellcasting. Bards also get 1d8. !d8 is basically the default level for everyone. Wizards and Sorcerers get less, but that's not really for good design reasons...

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) What would you want for 5e Dark Sun?

The irony here is that the idea that you have to explain where the Dray comes from is something of a spoiler and enshrines something in canon you might not want enshrined. If their origin is a mystery in the setting, then why not let a mystery be the explanation for their existence? I'm also...

    D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on Improving Martials

Stances were a really good idea from 4E, that would be good to bring back. They were simple enough Essentials, so it's not as if they were especially complicated. Here's some ideas: Guardian Stance: When you hit en enemy while in this stance you may may use your reaction to make a melee attack...

D&D 5E (2014) When it comes to clues, it’s better to error on the side of “obvious” rather than “subtle."

Finding the clues is not the issue. Gumshoe and the like provide mechanical solutions, but the basic principle is not too difficult - don't gate necessary clues behind rolls. But it's figuring out what a clue means which may be the real stretch. Ultimately if everything is obvious and the...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Yeah. I think so. I don't remember it that well now, and I expect the differences wouldn't look as big now looking back. But elements of Kender worked their way in. I think Lidda, the iconic character also did a lot of heavy lifting. The bumbling chubby homebody was replaced with a tough...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I agree with you in regard to their literary purpose. But this seems in many ways an issue that has been brought to the fore again by 5e's efforts to return Halflings to something along the line of their hobbit roots. It's weird because I expressly remember the widespread praise when 3e...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

With the Sphere's of Might one it's intended to be used with the Spheres system, so that's where a lot of the power would come from. Mind you I haven't played it, or analysed it in depth, so it may still be underpowered. The Star Wars one is probably closest to what people here are talking...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

I tend to think the character who leads primarily fits better with what, in a lot of 3e iterations, was usually called the 'noble'.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Except for spells. Spells can be shared between classes. But that's magic I guess, so it can overcome the laws of game design.

D&D General Story Now, Skilled Play, and Elephants

There's a few tactical trade-offs. As support can be significant, you may be better off sometimes choosing to support another PC than attempt to progress the task forward. If you have two skills that are relevant but the support one if more likely to succeed well in this situation, then that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

The Battlemaster was intended to allow you to play something like a 4e Warlord yes. A lot of people don't seem happy with it. I think I would personally be a bit more happy with it if the combat mechanics didn't have to do all the work. If there actually was a simple mass battle system and...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Firbolgs were the most popular race in my recent game. I had two of them! Of course that was after I reskinned them, slightly tweaked their racial abilities and moved their Wisdom bonus to Charisma and said they were Ogre Magi - with a back story borrowed from the OSR setting Yoon Suin. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Spellcasters and Balance in 5e: A Poll

Birthright, which grant's you a magic sword and not just combat uses is a subclass feature. That is from the Weaponmaster subclass, but the Knight Subclass gains you something of a similar nature. You can see how these particular rules tie directly into the game's social pillar - the...
