D&D 5E (2014) So, how hard is it to kill PCs anyway?

What? Oh by the way, the monsters you are trying to kill, they may try to kill you back. Personally I hate the new death rules for this very reason. It makes a DM have to appear like a jerk. How I run it is simple. Smart foes KILL unconcious PCs as soon as they realize that the party has...

D&D 5E (2014) concentration in 5th edition, whats my fix?

One idea here. Let a full caster concentrate on one offensive spell, one defensive spell, and utilitarian spell at the same time. A half caster can concentrate on any two of the three at one time. Finally, a minor caster can concentrate on a single spell at once just like concentration allows now.

    D&D 5E (2014) Longswords

To me at least an easy solution would be the old edition rules that allowed you to add 1.5 strength bonus when wielding two handed weapons. This helps out make strength better for two handers but does not help the fact that a rapier by rules is generally better to build a character around than a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Animal Handling in 5e

I want to buy a mastiff have it trained to attack on command. NOPE, you want a pet you should have played a ranger..... So does that mean... I want to buy some healing pots for my next adventure. NOPE, you want to have healing you should have been a cleric...... And.... I want to hire a...

D&D 5E (2014) The fall from grace of the longsword

One other thought comes to mind. DnD groups are not armies on the battlefield. It might not always make the most sense to assume best or most common on battlefield means best for a group of adventurers. By 3rd or 4th level a DnD fighter is probably better than 99% of the soldiers on a medieval...

D&D 5E (2014) The fall from grace of the longsword

Why a longsword? How about unlike a warhammer, spiked mace, or battle axe I like the fact that I can sheath my longsword when not using it and have both hands free. You can try to hang a mace or warhammer off your belt but it just does not work as well and you are stuck carrying your battle axe...

    D&D 5E (2014) A single +1 armor for a level 10 party

And in 6E they may be candy again. Who cares. Do what you want and enjoy the game. It only really matters if you mix Wizards printed material and homebrew material as the former is balanced around the rather meager amount of magic given and can quickly become too easy if during your between...

    D&D 5E (2014) Asymmetrical stealth

You are right, but honestly I find the group check is rarely used. Far more often I see DMs blasting the entire party because the Paladin in full plate blew his stealth check while everyone else passed with flying colors.

    Lawful Good Rules Lawyers

The one problem with all of this is as a DM I occasionally fudge things on purpose. If a foe is fighting a less experienced player I may not invoke an ability that the foe has. Having a Rules Lawyer around pointing this out either makes me have to look like a fool for not using a foes abilities...

    D&D 5E (2014) Asymmetrical stealth

I like the Matt Mercier method where the looks at the number of successes and failures in the group. 5 party members and 3 succeed and 2 fail? That overall is a success. This way the party is not overly biased in the situation you described.

    D&D 5E (2014) Adventuring Days, XP & Leveling

I think most people who dislike the pace of leveling have an opinion similar to my own. Fred and his buddies set out to adventure the day Fred turned 18, all his buddies are about the same age. Assuming no one dies and no extensive "sailing to the lost continent" time sinks that same party will...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Lichdom?

Except I believe the soul feeding requirement is a 5E addition unless it came out somewhere during 3E. So most DnD related lich foes, you cannot take a walk without running into one in the FR were created before this obviously evil requirement was added.

D&D 5E (2014) Short and Long Rest limited Actions

I have to start by saying that I HATE actions that are limited use per day, especially the ones that do not make much sense in their limitation. Seriously, who can a fighter one do a single Action Surge (or 2 when 17th level) and then he needs a Short Rest. It makes no sense, in game it gives a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why Lichdom?

Very true, the only iconic big baddie that sticks out as being different is Manshoon the FR wizard and WOTC screwed him over by having one of the various magic apocalypses wake up all of his clones simultaneously.

    D&D 5E (2014) Determining a spellbook value

As far as I remember an Oni would be more like a Sorcerer than a Wizard. Which leads me to a mostly unrelated but kind of related set of questions. Can all wizards read each others spellbooks? Is a spellbook written by a dwarf automatically legible to an Elf? Also, can a sorcerer whose...
