D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do they stifle creativity and reduce options?

Seeing as Inspiration is a new concept and a dismal failure I dont agree that the best solution is for DMs to do what the rules say because we all have plenty of evidence that it does not happen.

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do they stifle creativity and reduce options?

Agreed, Inspiration as written is an epic failure. No DM ever does it. Far better would be a system where every player gets an Inspiration die that they can award to another player when he/she does something cool. Of course the "cool" would have to be DM approved just to make sure the players...

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do they stifle creativity and reduce options?

When a player tries to give their character some ability or benefit that exists in the rules not buy expending a a feat slot or level or background by writing it into their characters personal history. It is the player who completely maxes their character for combat then tries to get the party...

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do they stifle creativity and reduce options?

I do not have my characters Charisma nor his speech making skills. If you want to give inspiring speeches that rouse everyone around you then you take the feat. You do not get to give yourself a skill or talent just by writing it conveniently into your character background. This is the perfect...

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do they stifle creativity and reduce options?

Depends on the Feat in question. Some feats grant powers or abilities you just cannot have without the feat. Those you just cannot duplicate without the feat. In 5E a perfect example if Mage Initiate. You cannot roleplay yourself into having a couple cantrips and a free 1st level spell. Other...

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do they stifle creativity and reduce options?

I utterly fail to see the point here. Take the feat and you are so good at it that you automatically succeed when attempting the feat related skill. If you do not have the feat then you "might" pull off the action if you describe it well enough and make whatever related skill check the DM gives...

[UPDATED] Most D&D Players Prefer Humans - Without Feats!

To quote a cool guy from a few months back..... " Impressive… Every word in that sentence was wrong."

    The Monetization of D&D Play

If I start paying a few dollars every time I play at the local gaming store can I then demand that the store force the stupid MtG players from playing by yelling at the top of their lungs even when sitting two feet from each other? The cost might just be worth it then. As a further point, any...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

For 99.999999% of the history of the Realms the afterlife did suck, up until the Times of Trouble the Gods did not even bother to collect the souls of their devout when they arrived in the Afterlife.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

I do not watch GoT beyond Youtube clips but that sounds like something Bronn would absolutely say with a sarcastic smile on his face, and I love it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

Acererak is the returning spirit of Gary Gygax formed within DnD itself. He has become angry that DnD has become so much about "story" and "character development" and all that "nanny pants crap" that DMs and players like to have while holding hands and singing around the campfire. Angry what...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

LOL, funny and good point. Devils with their souls upon your death contract habits would be very unhappy that souls were being diverted and annihilated before they could be collected.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

Apples oranges mistake here I think. You quoted what it does to resurrected people and I was talking about what happens to all the souls of people who just die every day and dont get to go to the afterlife.

    D&D 5E (2014) Specters and Revivify

No, because when the second Revivify is cast the BBEG no longer meets the requirements of the spell. Yes he died with the last minute so he meets that requirement, but the spell then says "that creature returns to life with 1 hit point" since the BBEG was already brought back to life 30 seconds...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

I get the impression that the reason given is nothing more than "for the LULZ". Acererak is basically the epitome of everything. He is an almost unkillable Lich AND if you succeed in killing him he reforms where his hidden jar is and the module straight out states the Jar is so well hidden that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

Or they just die...... I might have missed the point where the module says the Soulmonger horribly tortures each soul as it rips each soul apart and feeds it to the god being created.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

Yes there is that, but honestly it is a HUGE hole in the story. You are telling me an insanely powerful archlich shows up and starts up a device that devours and destroys the immortal soul of every single person that dies and not a single deity of death cares in the least? Besides someone...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

Is one more evil god among the Realms that big of a deal? The damn things are everywhere already. Yes holding the Soulmonger long enough to kill all the Lich would be very difficult. As for the 1%, who cares quite simply. Just because you happen to be rich and powerful doesnt give someone the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

Reading through the Tomb of Annihilation and several thoughts occurred to me beyond general thoughts about the overall design of the module. 1. Rich getting richer - Overall this module is about savings the 1% and helping them stay the 1%. Even in a magic heavy world like the Forgotten Realms...
