D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

But again, if the players are happy with their cool powers and the GMs aren't, what do you do? Are players complaining about this? I see a lot of GMs in this thread.

Always a good question conspicuously left out if these discussions often. Of course, perhaps many people simply don't care about it.

Unless the lower level spells suddenly start costing more to cast for no reason, I don't see how that does anything.

Fun for who? The players are having fun casting all the spells they want and using all their cool abilities. The GM may or may not be having fun, but there seem to be plenty here (even GMs) who don't have any issues with player fun being more important than their own, or who are selfless enough...

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

Like I said, the point is taken. But there's still some squaring of the circle you could do. The game isn't zero sum.

That's a good point. I suppose there are positives to it. A shame for folks who prefer something else but feel obligated to official D&D though.

Your larger point is indisputable (and I apologize for trying to dispute it), but you specifically gave an example where no reasonable options or middle ground is possible. There are IMO plenty of cases where there is. 5.0 used to provide options for different rule systems. 5.5 doesn't. Do you...

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

It was easy (for the writers), but I take issue with being neat. Quite cludgy IMO.

Casters like casting spells. Why should they be ok with casting fewer of them?

Yeah, that would (and occasionally does) frustrate me. I want to run a somewhat (fantasy) realistic game where challenges exist and might get you if you're not careful, or lucky. Cakewalks bore me from either side of the screen.

I was more thinking options. Unfortunately 5.5 was designed without any.

I know I've said this before, but so long as enough people keep buying it, WotC isn't motivated to make changes.

Fair enough. Does that mean that you haven't experienced the problems others have enumerated in this thread, or that you just aren't bothered by them?

Yeah, they were pretty clear about that at the time.

This is what I'm trying to say. You don't have to abandon one demographic to go after another.

Unsurprisingly, I hate marketing. But, what are you going to do? Not look at anything?

Yup. That's what the reaction roll is for. Social stuff with potential foes is definitely part of it. Not the one who said otherwise, incidentally.

Like everything else, it varies by group, but I believe the intended playstyle was avoidance when possible. Getting the treasure/xp without getting killed was optimal by my reading.

Fair enough. I shouldn't be posting right now anyway. Bad mood. I apologize for upsetting you.

If you didn't like Level Up, do you think I would object to you saying so? People have done so, and I can take it. In the abstract, what you're saying is no one should discuss something they don't like, because someone who does like it might take it poorly. You're welcome to like whatever you...
