D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

Happy, content people don’t choose to leave hearth, home, and loved ones to venture forth and murder their way across the world for fortune and glory. There are a lot of bad cliches in backgrounds, sure. But you’d have a far more cozy game than most want if the PCs were happy and content at home.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

Option 1, don't use those characters. Option 2, pistols 1d8, rifles 1d10. Ignores armor, so always vs AC10. Damage dice can explode, i.e. roll max, roll again and add. No limit.

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

Not the same but similar, I keep thinking Call of Cthulhu would be a great game system for running Curse of Strahd.

Modiphius’ Discworld. Gloriously absurd chaos. And punes.

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

About 25 years ago, modern mechanics (for D&D at least) was the unified mechanic. Roll 1d20 + mods vs TN. Ditching all the different dice used in the various subsystems was considered new, innovative, and modern. But, for some reason, all those subsystems remained. Now I think modern mechanics...

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

For gritty but fun gaming, Dragonbane. For Pirates of the Caribbean + Evil Dead, Pirate Borg. For subtle absurdism, Modiphius’ Discworld. Or really any style as it’s incredibly light and versatile. For over-the-top absurdism, Monty Python’s Cocurricular Mediaeval Reenactment Programme.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Sure. But you at least have a better chance to know today’s set of secret codes y’all use amongst yourselves. The subtleties and hints. The implications. It legit feels like living inside a spy novel trying to decode some of the things people say. I just want people to be upfront and...

As a neurodivergent person it's so utterly frustrating trying to communicate with neurotypical people.

Considering it's a character that's really close to his real life, it's probably not a stretch.

    Spoilers Peacemaker Season 2 (Spoilers)

True. They were all labor camps. And some of them were death camps. Far more likely the Nazis just rounded up everyone they didn't like and stuck them in labor camps.

The Mighty Nein Animated Series to Debut on Prime Video on November 19th

Yeah. It's not about who's right. People being shocked about character death in D&D is not a new thing is all I was trying to say. Expecting PCs to survive has been a thing since the mid-to-late 80s. Yeah, those people are wrong. I came in after all that. I was surprised by the death when I got...

The Mighty Nein Animated Series to Debut on Prime Video on November 19th

To be fair, that's effectively been the baseline for D&D since the Hickman Revolution back in the 1980s.

    Spoilers Peacemaker Season 2 (Spoilers)

If the Nazis took over the US, then they likely built camps in the US. Depending on how long it took the Nazis to round up and eliminate the various populations they hated, the camps might not be all that historical. Given the size of the country and large number of isolated areas, it's possible...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I get it. But you need someway of making sure people are at least roughly on the same page. I've made pitches before where I thought I was crystal clear about the type of game I was going to run and still had people who were absolutely not a good fit or outright didn't want that kind of game.
