Call of Cthulhu General Thread [+]

You're right, of course. But the devil is in the details. My hesitance for using the 1920s is mostly down to people (myself absolutely included) constantly flubbing things by decades. Having to look things up mid-game sucks, so I prefer not to. Making the wrong call and having something not...

Nice. The Haunting is a great scenario. It's kinda too bad it's so famous, though. Makes it harder to run the thing without people knowing exactly what's coming. Not from cheating by reading the scenario, but it's just general gamer lore at this point. Yeah, that's one of the most common myths...

As strongly as it's possible to suggest, don't prep a plot or story for the PC to follow. Prep a situation with NPCs who have goals. Having something solid in your head about scene A, then scene B, then scene C, etc will only end in frustration all around. Follow the advice in the core book...

Yeah. I have a long list of Call of Cthulhu-appropriate music. I’ll have to round up my favorites and post them at some point.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Wow. That’s certainly a take. It makes a lot of your posts make sense though. Definitely means adding you to the soft ignore list.

I think it’s more toxic. One poster doing a drive-by isn’t that big of a deal compared to page after page of yelling from multiple posters.

The [+] is to keep things positive and prevent the same old, tired arguments about the style of play, genre, and time periods. There are plenty of other threads to hate on games and play styles you don’t like. Also, this isn’t the place to argue about H. P. Lovecraft’s racism. He was a racist...

What TTRPGs Excel At Not Having Combat?

Definitely recommend Call of Cthulhu. There are lots of great horror-mystery scenarios out there, but they do often involve combat. Nowhere near the amount of combat you'd find in a D&D module...mostly. But after a few sessions of tracking down clues, research at the library, and trips to the...

It shouldn't warrant it, but it would still need it. There are quite a few people who simply cannot abide anything even remotely negative or critical being said about 5E. They always treat anything negative as a user error rather than anything like a fault or flaw with the game. Even when the...

Doctor Who… Xmas Special in 2026

I do hope Billie does it for at least a special. But you could argue it’s a CYA situation. They had to put someone’s face in, and Billie agreed. Watch the end of the last episode again.

Some people can find the comedy is OSR/NSR games. I’m certainly one of them. I don’t mind throwing pawns away just to see what would happen. Especially if I think it’ll be funny.

Always let them run with their bad decisions. It makes for far more interesting stories. Also, how else will they learn the system unless they face the consequences of their bad choices?

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I'm beginning to think similarly about "let people like things." While I 100% agree with the sentiment, it seems to mostly be used to just shut down any and all criticism no matter how valid. I get not going out of your way to crap on other people's joy, that's not what I'm talking about. "I...

OSR New edition of OSE in 2026 (updated with some links)

No, and yes. No, the AD&D additions span everything. Races, classes, monsters, spells, magic items, etc. Lots of AD&D content was added. Yes, the main chassis and rules are still 100% B/X. Gavin and Co modified anything that needed changing when they imported the AD&D content to OSE.

    Pulp RPGs General Thread [+]

The overlap of pulp heroes and superheroes is something people have been talking about for almost a century. Batman being a Shadow knock-off. Superman being at least initially a Doc Savage knock-off. Etc. The pulp heroes would be the equivalent to street-level superheroes using the superhero...

    Pulp RPGs General Thread [+]

I do as well. It’s the same difference between something being published in a comic book vs the story itself being in the superhero genre. Only more confusing because they use the same name. Published in a pulp magazine (cheap, low-quality paper) does not make something the pulp genre (gonzo...
