I have recently been reunited with my Dragon and Polyhedron collection. But I was never separated from the CD ROM collection or the first Bests of Dragon. Best of Dragon I have material from the Strategic Review and it and Best of Dragon II are a great way to get a feel for early D&D.

OSR totally took off with 4e. The fact that both OSR and Pathfinder became so popular so fast was yet another bad omen for 4e. I know that 2014 brough back people who had played various pre 4e editions. Unclear if 2024 will keep them.

It makes options more visible and tangible. But even by 3rd level there will be a lot of options and it will start to get cumbersome. You could design a game to work like this indefinitely. But 2024 D&D is not that game.

I feel like it was earlier. We started using that very early. (Though the focus on warriors is funny, versus the poor magic user who might actually start with 2hp, and have like 10 by 4th level).
