D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

Parry. It should be easier for a "mundane" Figher to just not get hit because they put their weapon and/or shield in the way of an attack.

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

Back in the day we played a Magic User with 2 hit points, who died at zero hit points the first time he was hit, in the second room of the Moathouse, and we liked it. (Well not really, but we had been having fun before then.)

RPG Holidays Part Three – Additional RPG Holidays?

The problem with picking a specific day is that it will not always fall on the same day of the week, and that is bad for player availability and for promoting it in stores. It might be better to go with something like "A Saturday in June (and the pandemic isn't dire)" date range that Free RPG...

D&D 5E (2024) The Hit Dices (Hit Points) used in classes don't make sense.

For a true old school feel, weapons don't do damage, weapons do "hits". If you have 2 hit points and you're hit twice, you are dying. Three hits and you are dead. PC's have total hit points = to Level + CON bonus.

Planescape WotC Posts Real Estate Liating for Walking Castle in the Outlands

If you look at the prices for food & lodging then one GP is more like $80 to $100 US, so 500,000 GP's is more like $40 to 50 million USD. Location, location, location!

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Survivor - Adventures

Tomb of Annihilation 16 - 2 = 14 (don't mix a slow hex crawl with an urgent magical doom) The Wild Beyond the Witchlight 23 Tales from the Yawning Portal 24 Ghosts of Saltmarsh 28 + 1 = 29 (You were just so cool when I was 13 and you're been adapted acceptably)

    D&D 5E (2024) Limiting Short Rests to 2x/day

Three times per day, and you need to have food to do it - breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (Maybe four times a day for Halflings who take the new Racial Feat Second Breakfast....) You could just say that you need food as part of a Short Rest and that is why you're limited to three per day. That...

RPG Print News – Free League, Modiphius, Mongoose, and More

The Traveller Journal of the Travellers Aid Society #7 & #8 are $24.99, not $29.99. At least the two I bought yesterday at my FLGS listed that as their cover price. These are great magazines but they're probably too small to be worth $29.99 US.

D&D General What Should Today's Archetypes Be

I think that we would have some kind of sidekick class who, like Sam Gamgee, would be defined primarily by their relationship to one of the other characters and less by what they can do. This would also work for Jeeves & Wooster type characters where the game mechanics sidekick is the social and...

D&D General What Should Today's Archetypes Be

Without D&D the inspiration would have come from Traveller, so the classes would be Army, Marine, Merchant, Navy, Other, and Scout, they would just be sprinkled with fantasy.

D&D 5E (2014) What are the "True Issues" with 5e?

Rolling one d20 is very swingy. Bounded accuracy makes this much worse by reducing modifiers. It is ludicrous that an L1 INT 8 Barbarian who is untrained in Arcana (-1 modifier) will know things about magic [DC 15 Arcana check] that a L20 INT 20 Archmage trained in Arcana (+11 modifier) does...

D&D 5E (2024) Fix for the Druid's Wildshape: A limited number of beasts

What if every Wildshape had to be prepared and preparing them took up a spell prep slot? Maybe the slot you use has to be higher level if the beast is more powerful? If you want more beast shapes you'll have fewer spells prepared. This would properly nerf the massively overpowered Druid class...
