It's been so long since the last GURPS edition, that the present day is now in the "future" tech level

Douglas Cole is working on a modern action box set along the lines of XCOM for inspiration IIRC. So at least there may be a new ‘on ramp’ for people in the medium term.

From a meta perspective this seems like too easy a ‘win’. Both players could pull this trick every session and their Weaknesses would have been exercised from a game perspective with no downside since they are countering each other. In most systems a disadvantage has to actually impact you for...

I just got some additional stuff on a 24hr turnaround… (Didn’t realise the standee pack was different to what was included in the box set)

I run most all of my sessions from an iPad so PDF is my preference. But having the books to pass around at the table is great, and given that I am always hoping the other GMs in our group will like a system enough to run it and I can play, having physical books makes lending possible.

GURPS was my favourite system for decades, and is still in my Top 3. I think it is most suited to games with nuanced characters doing more than just a series of combats. If I wanted to run a game about investigation which focussed on the investigating (as opposed to the apprehension of perps)...

I finished reading the core book last night. I think some extra options will significantly increase the appeal of the game to my group (who like crunch on the whole). I’m currently GMing a Savage Worlds campaign which has another 4-6 sessions to run, then it will be someone else’s turn to run...

Looking at the label in more detail, it looks like it came from GamesQuest who are based in the UK. I don’t know if that means GQ serves UK orders only, or also cover their EU orders, too. So, technically it was bought local to me rather than international. But Free League’s operation is...

Am I using the right system?

Perhaps it would be more accurate to say systems other than (A)D&D and spin offs then. The d20 family tend so share that exponential growth, with the exception of BX family that is a bit more grounded. Look at other families like BRP and spin offs, Traveller spin offs, Advanced Fighting Fantasy...

Am I using the right system?

If you substitute the phrase ‘flat character growth’ for ‘bounded accuracy’ then I would suggest there are many games which will scratch this itch, including a swathe of OSR games and modern fantasy games. Even a game like GURPS has a pretty flat power growth structure in my experience (though...

I like the conditions system based on a read through. It gives a different take on attrition without being just depleted hit points or spell slots. One of the limitations of Savage Worlds is that there aren’t many tools for attrition over the course of a game arc. One of the options is Fatigue...

Your impression is correct! 🙂 SJ’s previous game was The Fantasy Trip, a dedicated fantasy RPG with just three stats (Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence). That system built off two arena combat games he had already created - Melee and Wizard. Melee originally just had ST and DX as stats. You...

Am I using the right system?

We’ve been playing a Forgotten Realms game for over a year which converted from 5e to Savage Pathfinder as our GM got a bit tired of 5e monsters in particular. It’s great fun. One of the subtle differences between Savage Worlds and D&D in general is that D&D has a resource attrition model...

Am I using the right system?

Have you seen Savage Pathfinder? It has class edges which being in aspects of D&D niches, while retaining all Savage Worlds tools (things like chases, mass combat, dramatic tasks). It has base fear rules in the core, and expanded fear rules in the Horror Companion if you want more emphasis on...

Having started reading the rules, the reason lowest wins is because of how Boons work in the system. Having a boon will reduce your roll so lowest roll needs to be best.

@Aldarc - I am, by default, a person who loves genre-flexible systems. Savage Worlds is my favourite these days, as it brings a pulp feel to games I run and that is great for 90% of my needs. But I do like gritty fantasy. Savage Worlds can do that, but a tailored system which hits my key wants...
