Savage Worlds Horror Companion Is More Than A Monster Mash

I’ve enjoyed them all so much I bought second copies to lend to my gaming group. 🙂 SWADE Horror is proudly in the ‘pulp horror’ space. I would pick it over Call of Cthulhu for a number of their classic campaigns which feature more direct confrontation with the mythos and cultists that can...

    Savage Worlds with no combat?

Dangerous Quick Encounters is the built-in implementation in Savage Worlds for de-emphasised combat. It’s a one-round activity, everyone says how their character is contributing and a skill is selected to cover that. It’s usually used for ‘speed bump’ combat where the outcome is pretty much...

What is it about TTRPGs for YOU?

I think there are many factors in combination which TTRPGs as my primary hobby. I have also done quite a bit of wargaming over the years (though not actively at the moment) and we also do quite a lot of board gaming these days. But RPGs are the #1. It gives a uniques set of opportunities, all...

The older i get the less I need.

Back when I was in my late teens / early twenties, cash was tight and I sold off some collections to fund new purchases. Eventually I regretted that and now I am very resistant to selling off parts of my collection. Recently I even bought back some of the systems I had sold after we moved to a...

    Dragonbane Post-Mortem

Probably a sensible approach. I would put Lost Colony as one of the least complex Pinnacle backdrops. ‘Proper’ Deadlands is possibly a little more complex, then Savage Pathfinder with Savage Rifts where everything goes to 11. I’m currently running the plot point campaign from the Lost Colony...

Kickstarter's 'U' Shaped Curve Is A Reverse 'J' And More Pronounced Than You Thought!

That is definitely a weakness from my perspective as a backer. When you have a few campaigns running from different creators, working out delivery target dates can be tricky since they all share that differently. It’s especially difficult a year down the line when the information starts to...

    Dragonbane Post-Mortem

Could you tell us more about what you thought worked well in Dragonbane? It’s a game I have read reviews of but not felt strongly enough to purchase. I would agree with others that you can be uber in AD&D, however it’s more about the treasure than character class based abilities. Rod of Lordly...

DC Heroes Role-Playing Game Gets New Reprint from Cryptozoic

It’s certainly been known for the legal wording of these long-term IPs* to be such that PDFs technically fall under the computer game license rather than a table-top game license. That has hampered PDFs of things like the Star Wars RPGs over the years. I was keen to pick up 1e for nostalgia...

Playing in Person Is Just Better (for me)

There were times it was more tricky than others. Being willing to play one or two down makes a big difference. Kids are now mostly grown up or at least in the age bracket where they don’t need their parents every day.

Playing in Person Is Just Better (for me)

It works out on a practical level similar total play-time as playing 2-3 hours per week, but only gaming every 3-4 weeks is easier to arrange for us when everyone has family and work commitments.

Playing in Person Is Just Better (for me)

We played online during Covid and it was a life-saver for our gaming and mental health. But we reverted back to f2f once the situation improved to the point where we were all comfortable being in the same room for 10 hrs (our normal play pattern was a 10 hr session on a weekend every 3-4 weeks)...

Trying to Describe "Narrative-Style Gameplay" to a Current Player in Real-World Terms

A couple of things come to mind on that thread, one general and one specific to the Narrative Dice System that FFG uses. In general, this kind of flow does not have to be mandated by the system. The GM can totally run other games with a similar flow to movies; it is my default style. Zoom in on...

D&D General Watch the Baldur's Gate 3 Cast Play 'What We Do In The Shadow-Cursed Lands'

WotC seem to be keen on multi-media leveraging of the D&D brand so they need to do something with their IP in a different media at some point…

Trying to Describe "Narrative-Style Gameplay" to a Current Player in Real-World Terms

I haven’t played the FFG Star Wars systems recently, but I do recall that gear was potentially still a thing in that system. And I think sci-fi particularly prone to this dilemma due to some things being extremely expensive and the assumption of a large economy. My players joke about it in the...

Trying to Describe "Narrative-Style Gameplay" to a Current Player in Real-World Terms

That was the game we were playing, and he knew that but didn’t understand the implications until it was explained. Now we all get it and when we are playing genre games we stick with them.

[Kickstarter] Broken Empires RPG by Trevor Devall of Me, Myself and Die!

I’m in a similar space, though with D&D rather than PF1. I’ll still use Savage Worlds for pulp fantasy but I think TBE may well become my go-to for gritty fantasy.
