D&D 5E (2024) No way to end Rage on your turn with 2024 rules?

I suspect this is an intentional design choice.

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

I've supervised extended essays on Tolkien (a 4000 word research paper that is required for International Diploma graduates) for the past two years running. I mention this because it indicates that Tolkien remains evergreen - young folks are still getting lost in his world. Oh, and both students...

D&D General How many healing potions do you give your party?

They're not super rare - most herbalists sell them and have a few on hand, and I plant them on a fair number of BBEGs to help keep them alive. So if they don't get a chance to use them then the party of course loots the potions. I checked and right now there are three in the party.

D&D General How Do I Help Mentor a GM Making Rookie Mistakes?

Awesome! This could be the DM's preference, or maybe she'll refine her style. This sounds like a perfect formative experience for your DM - things didn't go as planned, and she was disappointed. She doesn't need notes; she clearly gets it and can come up with her own solutions in the future...

D&D General D&D Releases New Japanese Campaign 'Oni’s Right Hand'

That's super cool - I hope we get an English translation!

D&D General One-Shot Wonders, Vol. II announced

Yeah - these sessions are short, and because the adventures themselves are basic they are easy to tailor to the specific group so I can work in a bit of their character backstories. Also, the maps are gorgeous.

D&D General One-Shot Wonders, Vol. II announced

I bought all three on DDB, and I look forward to buying this one as well. They are outstanding plug and play resources with excellent DDB integration. I am planning to build my entire beginner campaign with them in the Fall.

You should read (or listen) to Dungeon Crawler Carl

I don't want to oversell DCC, despite having read every book. The underlying story is basically dumb as f***. But it manages to invest me in the principle characters and each book has a clear story with plenty of vivid action. It is popcorn literature for fantasy/sci-fi/video game nerds.

Avatar: Fire and Ash | Official Trailer

Same. These films make a ton of money for being profoundly mediocre in everything but technical execution. I saw this trailer before FF and could not be arsed.

    Spoilers Fantastic Four (Spoilers)

I really, really dislike this way of framing story design, as if giving a film emotional stakes, which should be the heart of any good story, makes it “more soap than superhero.” I think making the story more about a baby than about Galactus is a genius solution that solves the problem of how...

    Spoilers Fantastic Four (Spoilers)

Another thing I like is that there wasn’t an extended subplot about sad/angry Ben. You can see he’s a bit melancholy at times, but for the most part he seems to be in a good place. And this version of Sue Richards is fierce!

    What's Your Price Limit?

For me the main cost is storage space, so now I buy very few books that aren’t digital. One so far this year (the new MM). But books overall are a drop in the bucket compared to what I spend on accessories, especially miniatures, terrain, and paint. I impulse buy $10-30 books on DDB all the...

D&D General Your last adventure in photos.

The party managed to use a (somewhat) unexpected backdoor entrance to the BBEG's lair, though they did have to get past an Eye of the Deep. Then they had to break up the evil ceremony to wrap up the first arc of the campaign. I typically design encounters based on miniatures that I want to use...

    Wizkids mini question

I do not recommend adding flocking or other features to bases for D&D miniatures as they will be used in a lot of different environments, and the most common one is likely a stone floor (e.g. a dungeon). IMO neutral bases (clear or black) are the way to go, especially if you also use terrain, as...

    Running multiple games in parallel?

I have my home games, which is usually one campaign but sometimes two, with mostly different players. And then I have my D&D Club campaigns at school, where I run either a single campaign each term, or two on alternating weeks if demand requires it. So I usually have at least two campaigns on...

    Spoilers Fantastic Four (Spoilers)

I really enjoyed it. It's slower paced than most MCU films (only two real action sequences), with a tight story arc. I like that the script is laser focused just on the team and their dynamic, and how the whole plot extends from Sue's pregnancy. There is some humour, but it is much less...

Critical Role's The Mighty Nein Reveals First Look, Season 1 to Air on November 19th

I think the issue is that Mercer has been overindulging in his epic storyteller tendencies, to the point that it is disempowering the players. They are doing improv with their characters in lieu of having real decisions to make. I used to argue against the widespread argument that CR is...
