D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

If the two games are equivalent in “quality” but different in presentation and execution, then my preference is always going to be for the novel option over the familiar one. For me, who gets bored fairly rapidly, change is a virtue.

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

I mean, 99.9% of the news is about things I have no control over; that doesn’t mean I don’t have opinions about it. :)

D&D General Forgotten Realms Books Tables of Contents

Thanks for the info. Moves it from a maybe to a no, so definitely helpful.

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

What game you play at your own tables is certainly up to you. What game benefits from the network effects of having a brand name and a very large pool of players precisely because of that brand name is very much a function of brand recognition alone.

D&D General Forgotten Realms Books Tables of Contents

I do wonder exactly how BG3 oriented the Baldur's Gate section will be.

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

Whenever I see the phrase “OC community” I want to post a gif of Adam Brody as Seth Cohen.

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

Sure, but Pun-Pun was really an issue of a problematic core spell (polymorph self) turning every monster book into a possible player-facing splat. That wasn't an issue with specified player-focused splat material. Yes, Nightsticks and Divine Metamagic were problematic, no question. (Although...

Purple Dragon Knight Retooled as Banneret in D&D's Heroes of Faerun Book

A bunch of psychic knowledge-seeking dragons having a secret reason to ally with a group of humans seems like a natural story hook to me.

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

Sure. Preferences are of course preferences, de gustibus and all that. I would note only that my earlier post #585 wasn't really about preferences; it was more pushback against the conventional wisdom that splatbook bloat was the ultimate cause of 3.5's noted balance issues. My personal...

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

<shrug> I prefer later 3.5 precisely because it's moving in a flavor direction towards the then-impending 4e, and away from classic AD&Disms. I'll take warblades, binders, and beguilers over fighter, wizard, and cleric every day of the week.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

If there’s a specific concern about chain-chugging healing potions, you could always add some sort of “potion toxicity” rule. Like ingesting more than 2 potions within a minute poisons the character or something.

D&D General What Are Dragonlance's Weis & Hickman, and Actor Manganiello Cooking Up?

I don't think Ansalon has any sort of ethnic identity. It's a fantasy world; ultimately I don't see a reason not to pursue an idealized "colorblind" cosmopolitanism for all the races in the setting unless something like real-world ethnic tension is a theme within the setting. DL has the...

D&D General What Are Dragonlance's Weis & Hickman, and Actor Manganiello Cooking Up?

I think a point of contention is that for a lot of us, adhering to the Elmore art simply isn’t that important. The character descriptions are only loosely sketched out within the book text itself, and that’s really the only standard a live-action adaptation should make a good faith effort to...

D&D General What Are Dragonlance's Weis & Hickman, and Actor Manganiello Cooking Up?

“Should be” doing a lot of work there lol. I hope the cast looks pretty much like the cast of Sinners.

D&D General What Are Dragonlance's Weis & Hickman, and Actor Manganiello Cooking Up?

Character descriptions like skin color and hair color are meaningless when you’re adapting a non-Earth fantasy work to a live-action adaptation. Just cast good actors!

D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

I'm starting to think it might actually just be simpler to never add constants, and just build dice pools. Stat progression is 0, +1d4, +1d6, +1d8, +1d10, +1d12. Proficiency starts at +d4 and goes to +d12.

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

To be fair to @Retreater, if that's the normal level of tactical acumen the party shows, it's not a big surprise that they're also TPKing all the time. The rogue is the big offender here; if you won initiative on them, why not just use a ranged sneak attack and move away? Rogue should never be...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

If you wanted to make it simpler, but also more fast-paced, you could also just gain the benefits of a long rest only when the characters level. 7-8 challenging encounters per level is around the average for my groups. I'll also add my normal caveat that powerful abilities (like spells)...
