D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

Indeed. I've only read He Who Fights with Monsters, and only because it was highly recommended to me. And it's good. Worth reading. But I've heard some negative things about some other LitRPG books. So far I have not ventured beyond this series. But Dungeon Crawler Carl will probably be my next...

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

No there is no game. The author is creating the system, as background, that governs certain aspects of the setting in the novels. It's just a premise which uses the conventions of RPGs with science-fiction and fantasy novels. In this case, the main character is transported to a world which...

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

They are high on my list (I am reading comedy crime stuff right now). But I can recommend the LitRPG series, "He Who Fights with Monsters" by Shirtaloon. Warning: BIG books, and 12 of them so far, and he puts out a new book relatively often. I prefer them as audio books.

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

Agreed. And I'd say The Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch is up there too.

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

As one of my groups approaches switching over to 2024, and having read much more of the new core books than before, I am overall very happy with the 2024 rules but bothered by some elements here and there. The subclasses are overall vastly improved. The monsters are, in general, vastly...

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

Am I to understand that Mr. Ahmed said in his blog that his depression has not just caused him to not write the sequel, not just caused him to not respond to fans with any updates anymore, but had caused him to complete an entire draft of the sequel and then delete the entire thing? Woof. It...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

That's why I posted the link I did. Dan was there for the Star Frontiers stuff personally, and directly speaks to Ernies lack of knowledge and involvement with the project. He says Ernie had zero awareness or opportunity to be aware of what was in it and what was happening, and Dan is the one...

D&D General No One Reads Conan Now -- So What Are They Reading?

The new Savage Sword of Conan, and Conan the Barbarian, comics from Titan Comics seem to be doing pretty well.

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

Vlog of Many Things and Tenkars Tavern have a direct refutation of some of the things said in this thread, and Don directly refutes the claim that Ernie Gygax Jr. had anything to do with the Star Frontiers manual wrongly referenced in this thread by @Malmuria ...

D&D 5E (2014) Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

Tomb of Annihilation is an adventure I've played for the past four years, and we're at the climax just now. I would say it's 100% a classic. Wonderful adventure all the way through.

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

I'm done replying tit for tat with you because it's not productive. But on this one, I encourage you to read the entry in the MM, and then apologize for claiming I had no reason to mention it. If I didn't mention it, people would have said why I ignored a stated ability of there. Which is why...

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

They start with enough gold for a Scale Mail, Shield, Battle Axe, and some other equipment. You don't get to make defensive assumptions for the Fighter but not the Barbarian to prove your point. Let's put this issue to bed: Barbarian starts with 18 AC. Obviously they can take another feat but...

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

Agreed it's meaningful. 13 hit points under this analysis. Which would be offset by 4.33 normal blows from a goblin warrior, or 3 blows from a goblin warrior with advantage (see below*) from damage resistance. And that's not counting the Barbarian has 2 more hit points to begin with. In my...

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

It's spin though. Fighters usually don't take it. But OK. Fighters have 1 more AC, and d10 healing every short rest, vs Rage resistance to damage and 2 more hit points. Seems a push on defense, with lower offense.

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

Barbarians usually have a +2 dex. Too much depends on it. And why would Fighter be taking Defense?

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

It's not "good" though and I assumed chain in my next sentence! They have the same AC. They start with the same cash to buy it. They have the same AC, if they want. The Barbarian can afford medium armor, shield, and Dex +2 for the same AC. I spelled it out. +2 Dex is pretty standard for...

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

ONLY if they chose Defense as their fighting style, which is unlikley. That's silly. Barbarian could do the same thing. They both get the same feat at level 1. Not at level 1 they don't. Why would the fighter get the benefit of racial choice and not the barbarian? And why is the barbarian...

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

You cannot reckless attack at level 1, and we're only talking about level 1, so irrelevant. Literally ONLY applicable after level 1. Versus no damage reduction for the fighter.

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

Why would the barbarian get hit twice as often with the same AC, same weapon, and same shield? Where is this misnomer that the Barbarian has a lower AC at level 1 coming from? Unless the fighter is choosing the Defense fighting style, they likely both have 17 or 18 AC.
