D&D General Reification versus ludification in 5E/6E

Both of you are going to be in trouble with the pedantry police!

Interesting. Inflict ups their damage average from 5 to 11. I'd say doubling their DPR should be a CR adjustment.

None of those traits were in the 2014 rules. They're all new. I think at this point the conversation isn't productive. You claimed Crawford spoke to CR, he didn't so you claimed him not talking about it is evidence it doesn't matter. You claimed 2014 is the rule when it obviously isn't. You...

    D&D 5E (2024) New Constructs, Plants, Beasts & Humanoids | 2024 Monster Manual | D&D

Right. WITHOUT mentioning the impact on CR. Which is what I have been talking about and you responded to. CRAWFORD DOES NOT METION WHAT IMPACT SPECIES TRAITS ADDED TO NPCS HAS ON THE NPCS CR. We agree on that now? He doesn't in any way say or imply no impact on CR. The DMG says it may well...

He didn't. He really didn't say that. He said you can just call it whatever species you want but he does not say go ahead and add any traits and it has no impact on CR. He never once mentions the impact on CR in the video. Just flat out he does not say that. Do I need to go to the video and...

I'd like WOTC's opinion on that, rather than a non-designers opinion.

LOL they didn't work in 2014, they sure don't work for 2024 monsters, ad it's absurd to claim they do. The CRs never worked from 2014. I think there is about as widespread an agreement on D&D topics you can find on the Internet that the 2014 guidelines never worked for that topic.

Why do you reference the 2014 DMG rules when we're not using those, and they changed assumptions quite a bit for monsters in 2024?

When you add something, and then remove something else because you added something, that's what replace means. I am not being deliberately obtuse at all. I am saying I, and others, want to add traits to existing NPC blocks (not replace like you described) and know if that changes the CR...

    D&D 5E (2024) New Constructs, Plants, Beasts & Humanoids | 2024 Monster Manual | D&D

It's not using 2014 rules They did not leave out any mention of similar traits. They do in fact mention similar things. Just not similar enough to really make a call one way or the other. I do not think their lack of mention is a sign they think something specific about them.

And I disagree. And the DMG guidelines seem to say it might or might not impact CR. Which is why I say they should have added guidelines for this. Even if it's to agree with you, a single friggen sentence guideline in either the DMG or the MM was in order for these two very common species for...

    D&D 5E (2024) New Constructs, Plants, Beasts & Humanoids | 2024 Monster Manual | D&D

A drow is not listed as a creature in the MM or elsewhere in 2024, so far. No, it's whatever NPC block you choose for the species in that moment. Crawford made that darn clear. Drow Pirate is supposed to be an option. Adding species traits according to DMG is supposed to be an option...

    D&D 5E (2024) New Constructs, Plants, Beasts & Humanoids | 2024 Monster Manual | D&D

Other species getting perks is not, in any way, an answer to the question. You're intended to use that NPC block as-is without adding in species traits at that CR. Adding species traits which alter things about AC, Attack, Damage, and Hit Points according to the DMG may in fact alter CR. And...

    D&D 5E (2024) New Constructs, Plants, Beasts & Humanoids | 2024 Monster Manual | D&D

I don't need lore, I need to know what the friggen CR is of a Drow or Orc Pirate which has the species trait of a Drow or Orc added to the Pirate NPC template which does in fact impact critical elements such as AC, Hit Points, Attack and Damage. And they didn't include that analysis at all. The...

    D&D 5E (2024) New Constructs, Plants, Beasts & Humanoids | 2024 Monster Manual | D&D

So let's start with Drow: Add Dancing Lights, Faerie Fire, and Darkness to an NPC statblock. Faerie Fire gives advantage to you and all allies. Darkness gives advantage to attack and disadvantage for them to attack. Alteration to AC, attack bonus, and damage or not? I'd say yes, it definitely...

Oh man, "buy another book to get a few Drow for your campaign" is so not in any way the "perfect solution." They could have included a few in the MM, like they have every MM for decades, and then included some more variations in a setting book. That would have been much better. Instead I have...

D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Class Rankings (from nat1gaming.com) for ppl who believe that stuff.

Fighters can out-pace barbarian damage slightly at higher levels but the gap is small. Regardless, most campaigns end around level 10, and I just don't see ranking the highest damage dealers for most campaigns as the lowest rank.
